I have a .NET component that I have registered in COM+ on the remote machine. I'm trying to create an object off that machine on my local machine in a VBA application, but I get RTE 462, "Remote server machine not available..."
Where do I start looking to resolve this issue? My local machine is XP SP2, server is Windows Server 2003 SP1.

Hi all! I am not sure if this is right place to ask this question, but I have always received excellent information from the ppl on this forum, so here it goes.
The problems I am having started a couple of months ago, before that everything worked pretty smoothly for a couple of years.
We have a MSW 2003 domain controller. At this moment, none of the computers that are logged into the domain show up in the network (Network Places--> Entire Network--> Microsoft Windows Network --> 'Network Name'). This is true for both the server and all computers in the network. This problem started when we had to change to a different NIC on the board due to the other one going bad. I also tried another NIC after that with the same problem. Heres the strange part. You can do a search for the computers by name and they will be found (either \\computername or doing a start-->search-->computername).
I made sure all of the DNS info is the same across all computers. I have the default setting for NETBios. I have the domain controller as the first DNS (Which it is also a DNS server) for all machines. All computers show up in AD.
I triple checked to make sure all of the settings for the new NIC were the same as the one we previously used.
I am at loss. Any direction would be helpful and appreciated.

which book should i refer to know internals of the FAT32 file system.
actually i want to write a program that will be able to
read the file system but it runs without kernel.
(it's in embedded domain.)

Hi,
can CPU temperature be measured by reading a memory map(SMBIOS viewer)I do not want to use wmi for directly reading the CPU temperature. coz that is hardware dependant.? is it possible by reading memory map and then calculating from it?
If yes, please let me know how should i proceed.

Nope. Usually that value is read from an I/O port by a device driver. This is actually far more hardware dependant than WMI. WMI supplies a consistant interface for vendors to use to supply your app this information. But, it only works if the manufacturer of the MoBo supplies a WMI Provider for their boards - most do NOT do this.

Actually only since wmi is not supported by most of the manufacturers, I wanted to read memory map ..though more h/w dependant.
I thought, if I have a memory map of a machine, i will surely be able to calculate cpu temp on that particular machine.

The "memory locations", or I/O port numbers, you're talking about change from chipset to chipset. You'd have to write code to detect the chipset the mobo uses, then look at the correct spots, then do any math necessary, and correctly, to calculate the value you're looking for. I'd rather have the manufacturer do that for me instead of me having to support dozens of modules to get the values you want.

i have one doubt what it means that whether the AMD and INTEL software are same or different when i installing into the system.i am having AMD processor i lossed my motherboard cd u just tell that whether i get motherboard cd or not

Open the computer, Look on the motherbouar for their product id, And go to their site and download drivers, manuals, ...
But it will not be the same as CD.
and AMD or intell processor isn't going make any diffrance. The only thing is important is manufactior and Product ID.
How old is your motherboard, Does all required driver included in your OS (Windows XP, Linux) system? If so you don't need it

When you first turn it on, it won't start, but if you restart, it will ? When did you last install Windows ? From the specs, I'd say this is an old PC, have you ever reinstalled windows ? It does get itself messed up over time. You can boot from the XP cd and get XP to repair itself, I'd try that first.

I installed a printer on my Win2k3 server box on my WORKGROUP LAN at home, and set it up to be a shared printer.
However, when I try to add a network printer on my other LAN boxes (all are Win2K/SP4), I get various messages saying the printer isn't available, or isn't connected, and things like that.
Can someone list some things to check?

I don't have any clients connected to my server so I can't test this, but you might give it a try. In the Sharing tab of the printer properties there's a checkbox to "List in the directory." Check it and see if that helps.
I searched for a while last night trying to figure this one out, since I'll be running into it one day, too. All I can find is Microsoft's instructions to share the printer and advertise it. Searching on "advertise" returns absolutely nothing of interest, of course, and there are no instructions anywhere about how to do that. Maybe listing it in the directory will advertise it, like a yellow pages ad.
On the other hand, it might just mean that the printer will get a lot of calls from aluminum siding salesmen and vendors of Cialis, too. Who knows? Maybe after having several parts of its anatomy enlarged, the printer will feel more comfortable sharing itself. It's worth a try, I guess...

This is a Win2k3 server.
There is no checkbox anywhere in the sharing dialog that says "List in the directory". On the sharing tab, there's a pair of radio buttons that say
- Do not share this printer
- Share this printer
If you select "Share this printer", you can give the printer a name.
I can print from the server, but I can't connect to the printer from any other box (all of which are running Win2K/SP4) on the network.

Maybe it's a Lexmark thing, but I doubt it. My OS is Win2K3, Small Business Premium, SP1. Could that make a difference?
While I'm on it, does the LAN adapter have Microsoft File and Printer Sharing installed? I wouldn't recommend doing that on the WAN adapter, but you should have that on the LAN side, just in case you haven't checked.;)
There might be some permissions issues, too - Win2K3 has a bunch of them.

Mine is Enterprise version with SP1. Seems to me if yours has that checkbox, mine should definitely have it unless it's lexmark specific.

I looked at the permisssions thing, and as far as I can tell, everything is okay.
I figured since this is all on a WORKGROUP network, it should just work...

I don't remember from your original post - can you see the printer in the list when you try to select it from a client? Or does it add the printer okay, but just refuse to access it once it's been added? Could be a Browser Service problem...
I dunno; I'm stumped. As you say, it should just work. If I can figure out an excuse for hooking a printer onto the server at work this week, I'll experiment with it. In the meantime, I'll think on it some.

Well, I got it to work for my workstation, but my wife still can't see the printer. We're both members of the same groups, and as far as I can tell, we both have the same permissions. I'm sitting here dumbfounded.

Since a workgroup can't use AD to find a resource, and DNS works closely with AD, perhaps it need to have TCP over NetBIOS enabled, or have the Win2K3 box provide WINS service to make name resolution work properly. Can't hurt to try...

How are you adding the printer on the client? Via ip address/printername, or via server and printername.
IE. When you set up the printer on the client, you should be adding \\servername\printername rather than just \\printername.
Sorry if I'm stating the obvious.
