I have seen this problem periodically during writing data(Synchron or Asynchron) on a DVD-RAM :

My friends i need answer for my problem please. first now i will tell you about my computer the CPU 1.7,hard 80 GByte RAM 182 SD_RAM and the operating system which used windowsXp
the problem is when turn it don't complete but if i restart it will complete.

When you first turn it on, it won't start, but if you restart, it will ? When did you last install Windows ? From the specs, I'd say this is an old PC, have you ever reinstalled windows ? It does get itself messed up over time. You can boot from the XP cd and get XP to repair itself, I'd try that first.

I installed a printer on my Win2k3 server box on my WORKGROUP LAN at home, and set it up to be a shared printer.
However, when I try to add a network printer on my other LAN boxes (all are Win2K/SP4), I get various messages saying the printer isn't available, or isn't connected, and things like that.
Can someone list some things to check?

I don't have any clients connected to my server so I can't test this, but you might give it a try. In the Sharing tab of the printer properties there's a checkbox to "List in the directory." Check it and see if that helps.
I searched for a while last night trying to figure this one out, since I'll be running into it one day, too. All I can find is Microsoft's instructions to share the printer and advertise it. Searching on "advertise" returns absolutely nothing of interest, of course, and there are no instructions anywhere about how to do that. Maybe listing it in the directory will advertise it, like a yellow pages ad.
On the other hand, it might just mean that the printer will get a lot of calls from aluminum siding salesmen and vendors of Cialis, too. Who knows? Maybe after having several parts of its anatomy enlarged, the printer will feel more comfortable sharing itself. It's worth a try, I guess...

This is a Win2k3 server.
There is no checkbox anywhere in the sharing dialog that says "List in the directory". On the sharing tab, there's a pair of radio buttons that say
- Do not share this printer
- Share this printer
If you select "Share this printer", you can give the printer a name.
I can print from the server, but I can't connect to the printer from any other box (all of which are running Win2K/SP4) on the network.

And the "List in the directory" check box is there, bigger than s&*t, right under the text box for the share name.
Maybe it's a Lexmark thing, but I doubt it. My OS is Win2K3, Small Business Premium, SP1. Could that make a difference?
While I'm on it, does the LAN adapter have Microsoft File and Printer Sharing installed? I wouldn't recommend doing that on the WAN adapter, but you should have that on the LAN side, just in case you haven't checked.;)
There might be some permissions issues, too - Win2K3 has a bunch of them.

Mine is Enterprise version with SP1. Seems to me if yours has that checkbox, mine should definitely have it unless it's lexmark specific.

I looked at the permisssions thing, and as far as I can tell, everything is okay.
I figured since this is all on a WORKGROUP network, it should just work...

I don't remember from your original post - can you see the printer in the list when you try to select it from a client? Or does it add the printer okay, but just refuse to access it once it's been added? Could be a Browser Service problem...
I dunno; I'm stumped. As you say, it should just work. If I can figure out an excuse for hooking a printer onto the server at work this week, I'll experiment with it. In the meantime, I'll think on it some.

Well, I got it to work for my workstation, but my wife still can't see the printer. We're both members of the same groups, and as far as I can tell, we both have the same permissions. I'm sitting here dumbfounded.

Since a workgroup can't use AD to find a resource, and DNS works closely with AD, perhaps it need to have TCP over NetBIOS enabled, or have the Win2K3 box provide WINS service to make name resolution work properly. Can't hurt to try...

How are you adding the printer on the client? Via ip address/printername, or via server and printername.
IE. When you set up the printer on the client, you should be adding \\servername\printername rather than just \\printername.

Well, I'm at the point that I can see the printer from all other boxes, but my wifes permissions level is somehow restricting her from doing anything on the server. And yeah, I'm using the \\server\printer name stuff...

When I give the print command in MS Word I wish to print the contents of the document to a file. Is this possible? I wanted to know if we can override the File->Save... option to copy (or rather Save) the contents to a file. Can we redirect the Print... command output to a file rather?

hi,
can anyone pls let me know, what are these registry entries for :
1) hkey_local_machine/software/microsoft/active setup/installed components
2) hkey_local_machine/software/microsoft/winnt/CurrentVersion/hotfix
I understand it is somthing related to SP. I guess hotfix contains the actual exes that are installed while installing SP. is this right? and what about the other? what exactly that is?

Well I'm not sure about the second key. But the HKEY_Local_Machine/Software/Microsoft/Active Setup/Installed Components key allows you to keep Windows from configuring certain components when you create a new profile on your computer.

In a linux style environment what command line would extract all the URLs from a text file?
I assume grep is my answer but am having a bit of fun trying to return just the URL and not the whole line.

I have a 2003 Terminal Server and I need to be able to prevent any file access to other machines whilst users are accessing the server. The users must not be able to map drives, access shares via unc path, or save to network locations in the Save As dialogue.
I could use IPSEC to block 445, but then I'd lose the ability to authenticate users and perform any other RPC tasks.
Any suggestions?
