Many do, but many don't. For example I wrote an XML serializer that can serialize pretty much anything you throw at it. You can use attribute decoration, but you don't have to. If you don't it just serializes all public properties like <property name="CustomerID">842</property> etc. I haven't written an article for it yet, but there have to be others.

It's an exxageration (to make a point) of adding floating point bias. All floating point types like float/single and double are approximate. The value 5 could actually equal 5.000002323 or 4.999999634. If the slightly lower than the desired perceived value, a rounding function could rounded to an undesired lower value during the cast to int. The bias corrects this. It would actually be more like 0.25001, depending on how much precision we want in the rounded value.

Thanks, I new a fresh mind on the problem would help. My problem was that since almost everything in the application was UI-related, I did it on the UI thread. That was fine until I needed to do something on a background thread. By inversing command i.e. running everything from the background thread, using dispatcher for all UI calls, this becomes a non-issue since I can Thread.Sleep (or whatever) on the background thread, while the UI thread just runs its message loop.

What format is it in? Was it ASCII originally?

Essentially, you need fewer variables to do multiple calculations, not more. You do not want to "hold numbers", you want to evaluate at each step. This would be different for a scientific calculator, which allows brackets, and needs to follow Order of Operations. In that case you would use a Queue or a Stack to accumulate operations until they are ready for evaluation.

Agreed. The only reason that I can think of to allocate this variable from the heap would be if it was quite big. Depending on the operating system, hardware, and compiler options, perhaps the stack is only 4096B and sizeof(NumDays) == 1024, it might make sense to allocate large items on the heap.

My suggestion of overriding the input size is the brute force method. The proper way would be to play nice with Bootstrap and use its column width specifiers.

1. I agree. Unfortunately for every Windows application that takes input from stdin there are 100 in UNIX that do. It is the norm in UNIX. It is the exception in Windows, which it too bad.

LOL, yes between 1995 and now I have created at least 30 Windows Services. Those that need to operate periodically include their own scheduler, and the service process runs continually once started until stopped. Others that are intended to run continually, like a print spooler do not include a scheduler component.

SC is a very handy tool to control services and is one great way to start and stop a service.

You are assuming that because in his code snippet he is starting the service with the syntax:

that he doesn't know how to operate sc. I have written many services that can be started by passing start or stop to the executable. In fact, sc did not exist before Windows XP, and that was the preferred way to control a service in NT and Win2K.

Not necessarily true. The purpose of an NT Service is to execute a conforming application in the context of the SYSTEM account (back in NT, more options now) without a user logged in and without user intervention.

A service can be designed to execute once and terminate. The most common example of this is services that need to execute once when the system is booted, but never again until the next boot.

Your solution is to read the man page for sc, but sc allows no control over scheduling, it is for service control. My solution uses sc in the batch file.

FTP is a (overly) complex protocol. It has many (active, passive, extended passive) modes (and submodes e.g. with NAT traversal) and each has its own requirements on both the client and the server in order to work correctly. It wouldn't be hard, if the configuration on the server or firewall were touched at all, to break something. Some are really tricky to hunt down. I remember once troubleshooting failed FTP connections and everything looked OK. The problem turned out to be that Windows allows connections to a foreign host to any TCP ports, and UNIX only allows connections to be made on the ephemeral ports. It took an old UNIX guy to solve in 1 minute what took us days to not solve.

You know, I think I knew of #warning and #error years ago, and had completely forgotten about them. It doesn't solve my problem, since I (the component creator) will get the warning, not the end-user, but thanks for reminding me about this.

Once you have referenced it, try adding it to the toolbox manually. Right click in the toolbox, then Add, and find the component in the list and check it.

In theory a 100Mb/s connection could support about 5333 users listening at 192kb/s. Reality would probably be less. A server with a gigabit connection may be able to handle 10,000 users.

To slap the images into a predetermined grid pattern would take no time at all; however an intelligent algorithm might need to consider: overall width and height; optimal tile size; how to decide which images to make big and small; how to optimally crop rectangular images to suit square tiles; best fit of large, medium, small tiles to fill a specified space; how to handle a shortage of images; etc. No trivial task.

Like I said, I tried searching for tiles (results are mostly Metro tiles), tiling (results are grids), mosaic (results are photomosaics), collage (results are mostly overlapping images to form a shape).

I imagine there is a name for the effect I'm looking for, but I don't know what it is.

Based on this API it looks like you don't have access to the raw data. It's stored on the device. It's probably not very useful to you. You are more interested in whether a finger has been scanned, whether that finger has been previously enrolled, and if so, who the finger belonged to.

Based on the calls being made, it can be assembled into a .com file (remember those?) and should run on any 8088 or later processor running DOS or later up to and including today's 32-bit Windows operating systems. It won't run on 64-bit Windows because 32-bit Windows emulates DOS using the NTVDM subsystem, which hasn't been implemented in 64-bit Windows (as far as I know).

It doesn't modify the application's behaviour, but it the past it has modified how Windows warned users about your application. Specifically, in Windows 7 the UAC warning is not shown if your application is signed. I was hoping this was the Win8 equivalent, but apparently not.

It's actually no different from running LibreOffice, Notepad++, Chrome, or anything else from a usb stick. Absolutely nothing is installed on the computer.

In the case of my client's software, you buy it from them, they send you a stick, you put it in your PC or Mac and double-click the icon. It runs whether you have an internet connection or not.

It's no different any other cross-platform software except instead of Flash, AIR, Java, Mono, Qt, ___ I'm using HTML5 and C# (cross-compiled to javascript). It's used in school classrooms where if there is an internet connection at all, it is probably heavily firewalled and/or filtered.

The previous version of the software (written by another company) used AIR and it was a huge problem because it required an installer, and school computers often have neither administrator access or an IT department to install software.

The ONLY process that is run is the web browser, although most users won't even realize they are using a web browser because it is run in Chromium app mode and looks like any other native application.

So back to the "problem". Since the application consists of .html, .js, and .css files, I'd like to be able to replace them. There are two ways to get a file from a remote server and save it on the filesystem from a web browser. (a) you issue a GET and let the browser ask where they would like the file saved; (b) you GET a file and save it in the filesystem using the HTML fileapi. Neither of these work. In the case of (a) we don't want the user to download a bunch of individual files or a zip and expect them to put them all in the right places; (b) the fileapi can't access parts of the filesystem outside of the sandbox.

Let's say you have a file on your desktop called foo.html. It has never been on a "site" in its life. I want foo.html to update itself when the web service says there is a new foo.html.

How so? On the client side there is no hosting to speak of. The user interacts with offline HTML stored on the filesystem.

Currently the only server involved is a web service that the client calls to register the software (IIS7/.NET4). To update, the client would poll the web service to see if an update is available, and then pull it.

If you were wanting input of a long string when len > buflen, yes you could create a loop in which you read a fixed number of bytes and process them.

Chris is right. Now that I can see your main(), you want to loop until the user chooses to exit. The reason you don't want to do this is that if every time you choose a menu item it does something and then calls main, all that code is accumulating and eventually the program will blow up with a stack overflow error. This would probably take a long time on a modern PC but maybe just a few iterations on an embedded system or an iPhone etc.

There used to be an add-on for Visual Studio 2005 called Visual Studio 2005 extensions for .NET Framework 3.0 but from what I understand it is no longer available. This is the API you're talking about. You could probably find it unofficially somewhere. If you're building a single-project solution you could install VS2010 Express (for free)

Without WPF you would need to write to the native Win32 API and I think that might be too much for you unless you have experience with interop.

I would disagree. In the case of reference types, like int above, using the structure's ToString() method is more readable, produces less IL code and will never result in a NullReferenceException. For String, you're unlikely to call ToString() so it's a non-issue; and for reference types that don't implement IConvertible you can't use Convert anyways.

Just to clarify, this is conversion, not casting. A cast would be like textBox1.Text = (string)player, which wouldn't compile, because int can't be cast to string. By using Convert (above) or object.ToString() (below) a conversion method is being invoked to make a string from the value. It is also a good time to point out that it is good practice, whenever creating a new class, to implement (override) the ToString() method if an instance can logically be expressed as a string.

You're right, technically the first one is not composite, but rather is a 2-byte precomposed form; whereas the second form is a 1-byte precomposed form (I didn't want to make the topic even MORE boring, but you made me :). The first form is the "standard normalized" version, the second is the "legacy normalized" version". Many western european accented characters have a legacy normalized form. These were created so that 8-bit systems had a fighting chance of being able to easily interpret most Unicode characters used in the west.

They are the same character but you are correct that the framework (and most Unicode implementations) are not great at evaluating all forms of equivalence.

The reason I need this is that I'm using the iTextSharp library to generate some PDFs and these characters only render correctly if I use the 8-bit form. I believe this is actually the font's fault, not iTextSharp's, but most commercially available fonts don't seem to render the first form of the character correctly -- they just omit it.

What printer are you using. Some thermal printers have two modes, page mode and line mode. In line mode you probably won't be able to use a Windows driver, but it will allow you to print a continuous report. You would need to use the printer's native language, like EPL2 etc.
