What the hell are we screwing around at, if we have decided tobacco is bad then ban it, immediately.
Job done, no more farting around with how or where it is advertised, what colour the packet is, where you can and cannot smoke etc.

Yeah well, if people were so smart how in the hell did we get reality TV?

.. along with alcoholic drinks, sugar-based drinks, artificial sweeteners, trans-fats, caffeine, sweets, MSG, oil, petrol, diesel, many plastics, aerosols and a whole heap of other things which are unarguably bad for us.
While we're at it, let's ban the sale of raw chicken unless anyone tries to eat it without cooking it. Is this really a risk we can afford to be taking?
Alternatively, we could just abandon the whole nanny state concept and treat people like adults. If we die, we die - surely a victory of sorts for evolution.

No, there is known benefit to drinking alcohol.
PeejayAdams wrote: sugar-based drinks
Sugar is not healthy, but lack of exercise is the key issue in type 2 diabetes, so rather than sugar, ban transport!
PeejayAdams wrote: artificial sweeteners
No health risk.
PeejayAdams wrote: trans-fats
Werent they banned already?
PeejayAdams wrote: caffeine
No, it has no health risk.
PeejayAdams wrote: sweets
Already covered that
PeejayAdams wrote: MSG
For those who dont like Chinese Food Syndrome, dont eat Chinese food!
PeejayAdams wrote: oil, petrol, diesel
Now you are being silly.
PeejayAdams wrote: we could just abandon the whole nanny state
So you think heroin, cocaine, meth, opium, crack, LSD, hash, shroooms, PCP, angel dust, etc etc etc should be legal?

It comes as a mighty relief to hear that tobacco is the only legal thing that's bad for us.
Whether that's proof or disproof that we live in age of excessive health and safety policies is up for debate, I guess

Well - maybe not the only legal thing that's bad for us, but, on the other hand, it's the only one that received public welfare[^]
Basically, it's a Communist plot by the right-wing tobacco growers - the government tax dollars going into keeping them in business.
Actually, the real problem with the TV adverts penalty is that it should also extract the money paid over the years (in this socialist-inspired mess!) from those fine patriotic American tobacco growers who'd never have taken demanded a government handout if they had know that (were it not going to them) would be a horrific interference by the government in the running of their business.

There used to be money in Opium too, in fact the UK govt went to war to protect its opium market.
There is sufficient will today to ban tobacco. Any govt with a pair should just do so. And 99% of smokers, while panicking at the thought, actually would feel grateful in their heart of hearts.

Very much so. We'd save a bloody fortune.

It is staggering how much some people spend on cigarettes. I have a friend who has little income, yet smokes 40 a day. That is a staggering 15 euros a day, 100 a week. As much as food!
|
|
|
|

That's kind of crazy - I spend about £20 a week on 'baccy.
I've never really understood people who smoke ready-rolled cigs. They're stupidly expensive, taste lousy and are way worse for you than the real thing. If you're going to do something, at least do it properly!

Yeah, when I smoked it was golf virginia, not a bad smoke in fact, and much nicer than pre rolled, and much cheaper.

You lucky bastards. AUD$40.00 for a packet of 40 over here. Missus does easily 3.5 packs a week. Stupid bastard.

With air-pollution levels currently being so bad that it equals to smoking 6 sigarettes per day in 1980, and the obesity-epedimic in the US starting at the time that they banned the smokes.
Yes, it is unhealthy. Living usually is, and I do not want to die healthy.

Really? In Holland? Surprises me. You are near the coast, should be fairly clean air.
Mexico City in the 80s. Now that WAS polluted. It actually hurt to breathe.

May surprise you that it is that polluted, I'm not, since I'm not near a coast and am near Chemelot. It has also been in the local news, that's where I got those numbers from.

Is their wind on shore most of the year?
Thats the difference, the wind in Holland os off the Channel/North Sea most of the time, it should keep it fairly clear. (Down here in South West England, the bit that sticks out into the Atlantic, we have about 4000 miles of sea between us and the next land, so we get the purest and freshest air you can imagine. )
Chemalot! I thought you were joking, King Arthur, Camelot and all that, but no:

Yeah, had a friend lived in Eijsden, spent a lot of time there. Nice area. And Maastricht.
I lived in Luxembourg for a while too, a very continental climate, bloody cold in winter!
