Yes, it's true.
According to the NYT, the messages stem from a lawsuit brought by the Justice Department in 1999. As part of the 2006 ruling in the suit, which sought to punish cigarette makers for decades of deceiving the public about the dangers of their product, the companies were ordered to disseminate "corrective statements" centered on the health risks and addictive nature of smoking. But until now, they resisted through appeals and by wrangling over wording.

It comes as a mighty relief to hear that tobacco is the only legal thing that's bad for us.
Whether that's proof or disproof that we live in age of excessive health and safety policies is up for debate, I guess

Basically, it's a Communist plot by the right-wing tobacco growers - the government tax dollars going into keeping them in business.
Actually, the real problem with the TV adverts penalty is that it should also extract the money paid over the years (in this socialist-inspired mess!) from those fine patriotic American tobacco growers who'd never have taken demanded a government handout if they had know that (were it not going to them) would be a horrific interference by the government in the running of their business.

There used to be money in Opium too, in fact the UK govt went to war to protect its opium market.
There is sufficient will today to ban tobacco. Any govt with a pair should just do so. And 99% of smokers, while panicking at the thought, actually would feel grateful in their heart of hearts.

It is staggering how much some people spend on cigarettes. I have a friend who has little income, yet smokes 40 a day. That is a staggering 15 euros a day, 100 a week. As much as food!

That's kind of crazy - I spend about £20 a week on 'baccy.
I've never really understood people who smoke ready-rolled cigs. They're stupidly expensive, taste lousy and are way worse for you than the real thing. If you're going to do something, at least do it properly!

Thats the difference, the wind in Holland os off the Channel/North Sea most of the time, it should keep it fairly clear. (Down here in South West England, the bit that sticks out into the Atlantic, we have about 4000 miles of sea between us and the next land, so we get the purest and freshest air you can imagine. )
