Having used Google to endrun around the paywall to the original article my opinion on this 180ed. The Daily Fail's clickbait implied the kid lost at big chunk if not all of his finger. The original article showed an unbandaged picture of the kids finger. From that, despite the families claim, it doesn't appear that he actually lost anything permanently at all. The cut went through his nail and doctors were forced to remove the half of it closest to the finger tip, but the finger tip ahead of where the nail was severed appears the normal size. Having had an ingrown nail removed once I know the kid isn't going to have an enjoyable month or two while it grows back; but there's nothing to indicate that there's any sort of real permanent injury.
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?

Training a telescope on one’s own belly button will only reveal lint. You like that? You go right on staring at it. I prefer looking at galaxies.
