The Mercati di Traiano is nice.
The Capitoline Museums is also nice espcially the view you get of the forum from the Tabularium[^]
Go up the vatican dome (again, by foot, just the stairs up are cool) and visit the museum (especially to see the death star[^])
Visit the churches around via Santa Cabrina (with the key-hole view[^] of the Vatican (at the door of the"Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta")
Visit (at least enter) all the churches you come across, there are really nice ones with surprising art in them.
The Basilica St-John Lateran is mighty impressive (even compared to St-Peter's) but it's out of the way,
If you want to do the tourist stuff, go early (coliseum, Roman Forum, ...) especially if it's a nice day.à
Stop for drinks at the Piazza Farnese (less touristy than nearby Campo di Fiori)
If you're into wine and small bytes (mostly cold stuff) : Il gigetto (Via dei Banchi Vecchi, 14).
If you like pizza, goto Pizzarium ( (Via della Meloria, 43, it's out of the way); it's the best pizza in Rome, not your usual round pizza, no seating, you eat on benches outside.

Good time of year if you ask me, not too hot, not too many tourists. Havent been myself, and Florence would probably be first on my list, so I cant recommend anywhere. (Except, as always, ask the locals where they eat, you always find the best restaurants that way.)

Two days ago, I wanted to update my graphics drivers because the Sleep function on my laptop wasn't working fine. Initally I thought it would be done very fast, but it wasn't. I have two graphics cards, an Intel and an AMD card, so I had to update two drivers. First I updated the Intel one, and that was fastly done. But then I saw in the Device Manager that my AMD driver was wiped from the system, probably because of the Intel update. So I couldn't update my AMD driver using the Device Manager. So I had to re-install it. This was a lot harder than I thought. First, I used the Auto-Detect tool to detect which driver would be the best for my computer and then install it. When trying to install the driver, I couldn't because of incompatible hardware or software. I saw that the Catalyst Control Center was still installed, so I tried to uninstall that because after searching, I found that it had to be removed before installing a new driver. Then I tried it again, but it could still not install. So I tried to install something else: the latest version of the Catalyst Display Driver, and that installed successfully. But it didn't instally a driver, only the Catalyst Install Manager. Thereupon, I installed the latest AMD beta driver. This installed successfully and the AMD driver appeared again in the Device Manager. Great!
Then I brought my computer in Sleep, to test whether it was working fine now. And it worked! But when I woke up my laptop, it suddenly restarted instead of waking up. Changing some configruations in the Power Options solved this problem, and then Sleeping and waking up worked fine. But I tried it a second time, and then, when waking up my laptop, the screen was continuously flickering, and I couldn't do very much, so I restarted my laptop. When doing that, I got a bluescreen, and I got the Startup Repair tool that fixed the problems. After several minutes, the tool was ready and I could log on. I was wondering how the tool fixed the problem and I went to the Device Manager. I saw that the tool removed the AMD driver to fix the problem, and that worked. I don't get bluescreens anymore, and I still can use my Intel driver. So all problems are fixed now? No, not all, there is just one problem remaining: my Intel driver does not support Sleep...

Basically, you broke the rules. Microsoft say that no one would be stupid enough to have two graphic cards, therefore you cant. End of story.
By the way the repair tool just did a 'last known good' ie, it reverted to the last driver state that booted successfully.

Yo ucan see why though, its not normal to have two graphics cards, so the installer from one is killing the other.
What you could try is getting hold of just the inf and sys file for each, and doing an upgrade of the driver in device manage and not use the supplied installer. You might be ok.

I will try that next time, but now it's too late because I can't install the AMD driver. I'll probably re-install Windows in July (when I have time) to solve all potential problems, and then I can try that.

I was just having a look at MongoDB, and so far I can say that I don't get the point (yet). You have no relational integrity, and you can insert whatever you want. Why on earth would anyone use a DB if he can't use relational integrity? Isn't this approach doomed to fail? I didn't look too deep yet, and I'm also not a database expert, but for me this whole fuss doesn't make sense. If MongoDB is just a database without relational integrity (this is as what I see it right now) I could just be using MariaDB or SQLite with RI turned off?
I will never again mention that Dalek Dave was the poster of the One Millionth Lounge Post, nor that it was complete drivel.

Despite the DB in it it's name is not a database as we used to know. It is from the family of document-base (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Document-oriented_database[^]). However I found it very useful for log. The fast (and somehow careless) insert, and the ability to filter log records by any of the properties fit me there...

Don't think from a RDBMS perspective. It is meant for a different use. There are few advantages of MondoDB over Traditional RDBMS.
- Really flexible data structures and data types
- Meta data, you can attach any type of information to any records/rows (using traditional db, this is a nightmare, now imagine all those custom fields you need for a CRM application)
- Unmatched Read and Write Performance
- Scalability, you can store really 'big' data
- HDD Storage is cheaper than RDBMS, specially when you need tens of terabytes of storage.
- No need for ORM, you can store your Code side Classes in Database without any extra efforts
So you cannot replace your RDBMS with NoSQL Database, but when you need to store some scientific data, or you want to implement custom caching, or when you want some intermediate space to perform a complex computing, there is no better option.

This is a curious one, I suppose it is horses for courses. We use Couchbase (which I'm lead to understand is similar). We use an in-memory couchbase instance as a cache repository- this works quite well. We also have a disk based instance to store some application information that would normally be held in web.config - this last saves us a re-deploy when version numbers change for example. I dare say NOSql would be good for logging.
Some people rave about NOSql DBs, but I wouldn't want to use one as a main backing store - I saw one company fail as it bought a system that effectively used SQL Sever without referential integrity. [Repair] jobs were lost in the system an the insurer we did the jobs for sacked the company off due to lack of reliability. The company at the time claimed their software handled the integrity and this was more efficient than letting the database do it. A miracle given how many man-years companies like Oracle & MS spend doing the same thing.

I think the second follows the first: to make an SQL database work properly you have to know what you are doing and this is skilled work. Most companies get devs to do their database work, and this leads to poor database design resulting in rigid structures, poor performance and when really bad a lack of integrity. So the devs fall back on on the idea that I mentioned about the company I worked for that failed - that they'll be easily able to code integrity where needed. My view is this is the point where you should be looking at a relational DB. This link[^] lists relational DB anti-patterns that indicate a NOSql DB might be better, I suspect there is call for the "opposite" set of slides which show signs you'd be better of not using NOSql for certain tasks.
