It's like a lot history, the stuff that is popular is beating another guy into submission. World War I cause Oil, WWII cause WWI not being suitable settled, Korea cause WWII, Vietnam cause WWII's Japanese invasion & Gulf I & II cause oil. Native American Vs. Transplants, Transplants have media and seem to win! Most cowboys weren't white they were virtual (& actual) slave labour from the East & West Indies & China Sigh | :sigh:

history and what actually happened are only remotely related, I have been reading up on WW1 and nearly everythingI thought I knew turned out to be fiction (basically only the death toll seems to be accurate every thing else is fabrication)

I know, I thought for years and was told the shooting stopped in 1918 only in Europe. A good thing to watch if you haven't is 'The History of Oil' by Rob Newman really makes you think 'Oil', it is a little left wing but it makes you think WTF | :WTF:

not sure of the oil link as coal was still the major source of fuel, most I have read put it down more to siblin rivalry.

Aahh yes, but a small matter of the Arms race cause by Sibling rivalry, Which led to HMS Dreadnough a oil powered behemoth of it's day (Iron hulled, no need for coaling). Our German cousins (literally in the Royal Family's case) wanted the same. Germany had no access to oil fields by land and had to get it as an import via the sea (where is this going?...) The Royal Navy owned the worlds oceans at the time so the Berlin to Bagdad railway was seen as the best, least sea option. The irony of it is the last bit of the Railway was built by the Royal Engineers (in 1941) madness Confused | :confused:

HMS Dreadnaught was coal fired, even the most mordern BB of WW1 were dual fuel Coal/Oil, further to that the main trust of the war was for land and britain as usual was not a main target but was dragged in defending a treaty country

most of germany's oil came from the eastern europe not the middle east

Ahh Darn, or Belgium to use a phrase. Mind you that did make a reasonable reason (slightly more than a bloke getting shot at a station). It's a case I suppose of putting two and two together and getting five... also not really trusting your history teachers.

history - British generals fought the war far behind the lines and were hated by the troops
fact - more british generals were killed than german, fench and american put together, Haig was gerneally very well liked by the troops and a lot of the late war generals were very highly regarded, the old school generals were all pretty mush gone by 1916 as they couldnt adapt to the new type of war

genersls forced attacks that had no hope of success, whilst these attack did occur they nearly all occured though pressure by political masters and against the advice of the generals

haig in particualr had no quarms about ording thousands to thier deaths,

fact haig was willing to try anything new to reduce casualties and was one of the most progressive leaders of any armed forces during the war

in 1914 the politicos in london refused the miltary permission to retreat to high ground forcing them to fight the war in the valley bottom with its associated mud and miltary horendous tactical positions

in 1916 the british industry was still making shratnal shells despite them being ineffective in trench warfare, but the govenment had place huge orders in 1914 and they had to be completed despite not being the right type of shell, this meant that early war british artillery was particually ineffective
(by 1918 britsih artillary was exceptionally effective)

history - the Generals still used the same discredited tactics
fact - the british tactics changed dematically thoughout the war , whilst the French (and the US ) were still using the same tactics in 1918 as they did in 1914 , the germans only changed in late 1918 when they moved to storm trooper tactics once they got the influx of trained trooped released by the end of the war in the east

another tipbit, the British front line in 1918 was twice the length it was in 1916 yet only had aboput half the number of troops to defend it (Lloyd George stopped conscription as he thought it would effect his reellection hopes)

Another good book to read is "The Unknown Army: Mutinies in the British Army in World War I" Also I was of the view it was fought by generals who had lots of experience fighting colonial wars where the was mismatch between arms (the Maxim versus the Spear etc.) and so hiding in a hole while the opposition charges at you was a sane idea. However it goes wrong when both sides do the same thing...

carefull you are hitting another myth, the British army of 1914 stopped the far bigger German army, that led to the trench war, if you are forced to attack the enemy trench you can use fire and maneuver or the walk to the gun they used, the first you neen trained troops for something the british army of 1916 did not have, the second was the only alternative (as the politico would not let you just defend but required attacks to calm the public at home , oh and to take pressure off the French )

did you know that your were far more likely to have been killed on D day then you were at the somme?

I did know that. It's odd really how Field Marshall Haig was vilified for so long, had a rehabilitation. Being vilified again...

politics pure politics, Lloyd George ran a propergander campaign to blame Haig so as to deflect his own resposibility

now I admit I am remembering this rather than looking it up but I seem to remember that the first case of syphilis in europe predates the first case of smallpox in the colonies (true only by a year or so) so you could argue that smallpox is the payback
