Added: Apparently, it took 2 hours for them to change the word "astrologers" to -- get this -- "astronomists", before it was finally fixed to "astronomers."
I still stand by what I wrote above, though.

I want those of you who have never been to Hull to imagine a grimy, run down fishing port town that has mass unemployment, no class, no style.
Where people are miserable and impoverished and education is frowned upon.
There is no ambition nor civic pride and it is inhabited by druggies, alcoholics, single mothers and there bastard offspring, all of whom rely upon benefits and handouts.
The only Art in Hull is Graffiti.

I've been to Hull and back twice - once to visit The Deep - I was working at another aquarium at the time and was asked to check out the opposition.
The other time was to take my daughter to look around the university as she was thinking of going there - luckily she chose to go to Liverpool, my own Alma Mater (and our home town).
Nothing I saw makes me anxious to make a third visit.

I was pretty sure it would go to Hull - look at the competition.
Leicester - it's a pleasant (if you like cities) city with a lot of history. Met some good people from there.
Dundee - Been there, nothing special. Has dolphins, which is a plus.
Swansea - As Dylan Thomas said: "It's a pretty, sh*tty city". I leave out the comma.
Dundee and Swansea aren't in England, so they stood no chance - NI got it last time. Worse, Dundee might not even be in the UK in 2017...
And Hull? It has no discernable culture so it had to win, if only to persuade the locals that mooning each other outside the pub is "cultural"

London and Paris are steeped in culture, they are the Rome and Athens of civilisation.
The Natural History Museum, The Globe Theatre, Covent Garden Opera House, Sadlers Wells. Royal Albert Hall, Shakespear in the Park etc etc etc!

We have one near here like that, the city of Needles, CA. The only reason they called it Needles is because nobody there knew how to spell 'hypodermic.' It has everything - poverty, drugs, unemployment, welfare, crime. About the only thing it lacks is a second 's' after its name.
