If I make a comment on a reply in the Q&A I am supposed to get a participation point.

yes. This has worked before.
And I don't really agree, if a comment-like reply in a forum yields debator or authority points, why would it yield points in a different category for Q&A? Look at the different ways to get participant points, posting a comment simply does not fit in that list.

So sounds like Participant points is right now. But they still didn't updated the comments points to any category.

How to gain Participant points...
MVP, 1000 points once a year maybe.
Newsletter opt in, 50 points, once only.
Sign-up, 100 points, once only.
Daily sign-in, 1 point, once a day.
Weekly Survey,5 points, once a week.
The only other way shown to get points is Post Comment, 1 point for the comment, up to 25 a day.
It is this one that I am not getting awarded.
I understand that if I post an answer, then I am rewarded for that answer, but as I am commenting on a particular Subject or article, that is a participation within that subject.
EG, If I edit, and get the edit points, and then leave a reason for my edit, (which I think is the correct procedure), then I have participated.
That ought to give the point as a particpant point, not a debator point, for there was nodebate, but merely information provided as to why I have improved the thing I edited.

1.
yes, posting a comment should be rewarded.
2.
I don't know whether "post comment in Q&A" actually gets rewarded at all right now, I stay well away of Q&A.
3.
My point is: all contributions to participation, except "post comment in Q&A", are of a more macroscopic nature. Everything one reads. posts, replies, comments, votes, bookmarks, could be construed as participation but isn't, why would "posting a comment" be then? It really should yield debator or authority points, nothing else.

Better Authority points because It is related to the Q/A(Which is calculating in Authority points too).

IMO it should be consistent with how the forums are handled.
And yes too many replies are called "general" and awarded debator points there, I have had a couple of discussions with Chris about that already. It starts with the default "message type"; it could easily be improved, it may be hard to get it (almost) right though.

Yeah it should be included in Authority points.

How can clarifying a question be an Authority Point?
Answering it, yes, but to inform that an action has been taken is participation.

Only in technical forums DD. Also I have seen many answers/links in general message, that's why.

As I said, it is not a debate, it is an improvement nut not an answer.
So it cannot be Debator Points, and it cannot be Authority Points.
But the participation is still there.

posting "please clarify" or "good answer" in a programming forum yields debator points (assuming message type "general").
posting "Elvis has died" or a CCC clue in the Lounge yields debator points.

What else could comments be? As Dave pointed out, a comment on an answer is not necessarily a contribution that adds to the answer, nor is it (always) a debate, a question, or (necessarily) organisation.

Thanks Chris, that was what I was, very poorly, attempting to point out.
(I presume the recount will be complete by the time I crawl my carcass into work in about 5 hours time )

Unfortunately I second guessed myself after Luc's comment and restarted the rep recalc. It will be done in around 13 hrs. Sorry - I should have just the final bit continue on and it would have been finished soon.

The "comment" may or may not have technical merit. If it has (e.g. "I would have used an extension method here"), it would yield Authority in a forum; and if it hasn't (e.g. "I like the way you explained that"), it would yield Debator in a forum (even when no debate is taking place). I fail to see why that would be any different in Q&A.

I'm surprised how things changed so much. I gained in author which I suspect is the bookmarking. Lost in debator and participant so overall approximately 400 down in total.

|
|
|

Yep, new author points and debator points for being bookmarked. Don't know about loosing debator/participant points though, I haven't lost any. I seem to have lost 80 authority points, for no apparent reason.
ADDED: what may have changed is this: I have noticed a lot of limits have been added to the FAQ, limiting almost every event to a specific number a day. If those limits now are effective, one could loose points.

Hi,
I was on the homepage, and saw a new box thingy saying "Articles Awaiting Approval", so I clicked the doodad because Oooh shiney. I assumed due to the re-calc I'd gained enough points to do this so I read the article. I didn't think it was quite up to scratch yet, so I left a [hopefully] helpful message.
My problem now is that if he replies to me, I have lost the ability to Approve, so I can't reply. Can something be done about this, like letting him know or something. The best link I can give you is http://www.codeproject.com/Messages/3726707/A-good-start.aspx[^] as I now can't get to the article.
My Jedi powers are weak, and getting weaker after the re-calc
|
|
|
|
|
I am able to approve articles and can't access that message.
|
|
|
|
|
Thanks, I'll just wait and see I suppose.
I didn't have approve rights before the re-calc, but I have just tipped over into silver for under "Author" - is that enough?
