Intel® Software Innovator Program

Did you know that Intel® offers a program specifically designed to support independent developers in using the latest technology and open source software to bring their ideas to life? Intel created this program in order to build relationships with software developers out in the real world creating everything from interactive virtual reality games to new devices to assist people with disabilities. The projects being created are at the forefront of technology today.

What is the Innovator Program?

The Intel® Software Innovator program supports innovative, independent developers who display an ability to create and demonstrate forward-looking projects by providing them with speaking and demonstration opportunities at industry events and developer gatherings. Through their expertise and innovation with cutting-edge technology, Intel Software Innovators demonstrate a spirit of ingenuity, experimentation, and progressive thinking that inspires the greater developer community.

The video above explains a bit more about the Innovator Program and features some of the amazing innovators that Intel works with.

What are Innovators Doing?

Hacking Disability with Intel® RealSense™ Technology

Paulo Pinheiro is using Intel® RealSense™ technology to develop a hands-free solution to control robotic wheelchairs. He has designed Wheelie to recognize facial expressions and translate these movements into wheelchair commands. This project can make a very real difference to people with limited mobility that are not able to operate the wheelchair’s joystick.

Augmented Reality - Now with Tanks

Tanked! is an arcade-style one-on-one tank battle game that Nathan Greiner developed on the foundation of Unity 3D and combines a custom built sand table, the Intel® RealSense™ camera 3D R200 and a projector to create a game in which players can manipulate the landscape of the game map with their hands. The players begin by building a virtual environment using real world sand as a haptic input device. The players maneuver their tanks across the dynamically generated terrain using valleys and mountains to their advantage changing their own cannon’s trajectory as well as dodging opponents’ artillery.

Use Virtual Reality to Create Your Own Music

Let go of the physical limitations of traditional musical instruments and create ones that are completely unique and made purely of the imagination with Shapesong created by Ryan Clark of Chronosapian Interactive. This game gives users the experience of playing and creating music and sharing those performances both inside and outside of VR. By creating your own instrument, playing music can be as simple or as complex as you want, and can be tailored exactly to your ability and style.

Anyone Can Build A Robot, Even You

With a goal of squeezing years of autonomous robot research into affordable consumer platforms, Martin Wojtczyk of Cubotix Rover, has taken the complexity out of robotics software enabling anybody who can drive a car to use their robots. This award-winning autonomous mobile platform utilizes a depth sensor for scene awareness, the compute power of a laptop for image processing and path planning, and the latest LEGO EV3 set to create a service robot for everyone.

Using Intel® RealSense™ Technology to Help the Blind See

Silviu Serban employs Intel® RealSense™ technology to provide a series of accessibility features for visually impaired individuals, empowering them to perform actions and tasks with more confidence and ease. The HELIOS headgear comes in 2 models, one for individuals with severe or complete blindness and another for those with low vision.

These five innovator projects are just a small sample of the many varied things that our innovators are working on. Intel encourages independent software developers to keep working towards the next big invention, enhancement or breakthrough.

What does it mean to be an Innovator?

Being an Innovator means that you want to actively participate in using Intel technology and support to design innovative projects and present those projects to others. Innovators are expected to leverage the insights and content Intel is able to provide into updates and communications to their communities. Innovators may have early access to information about upcoming technology to be released as well as support to attend tradeshows, conferences, and hackathons where they can valuable participants.

What does Intel look for in potential Innovators?

Intel is looking for software developers are creating innovative, quality projects that leverage current Intel technologies in application development, Internet of Things (IoT) projects and inventions, game development and new use cases in Virtual Reality (VR), and Artificial Intelligence (IA) models or agents built for performance. Innovators should be skilled in presenting their work in an engaging manner with experience in speaking, demonstrating, and responding to a live developer audience (such as trade shows, meetups, webinars, hackathons, codefests, and social media).
