"Casual" == t-shirt and shorts and optionally shoes.
"Business casual" == button-down shirt, no tie, slacks or kakhis, dress shoes (basically, business attire minus the jacket and tie)
"Smart casual" == no idea, never heard it before.
Me == button-down shirt (unbuttoned, untucked) and a t-shirt, shorts, tennis shoes (which I usually take off once I'm at my desk *wiggles toes*). Luckily I'm in California so I can wear that type of clothing every day.  I never ever wear long pants, I hate them. I'll only wear a long-sleeved shirt if it's cold or if I don't have any clean short-sleeved shirts.

My office is a "casual" dress environment, but still I should say you'll very seldom catch me at work without a tie. I like it. I really miss the old "Suits and Ties" system. I need it to make me feel like I'm at work. I don't understand why people say that they hate wearing ties. I've always loved my ties! (Even at school: in South Africa, we wear uniforms in public school. When it was suggested that we scrap the uniform idea, I was the first person to fight to keep them)

Ties restrict the flow of blood [and hence oxygen] to peoples brains.
For most people this isn't a problem, but developers have overly large brains, and this restricted bloodflow would severly reduce their productivity.
I never wear a tie [I'm in the smart casual brigade], if I have to meet customers or be client facing I switch into business casual mode

Anyone who doesn't know how to buy a shirt and tie that *fits* correctly I would say is unlikely to warrant the "large" adjective when describing their brain  .

I dunno.. at least Martha's concrete. The few times I've seen her shows, I could actually understand what she tried to convey.
I'm actually beginning to believe that he is the incarnation of Salvador Dali's paintings. He's kind of surreal at times.

Well I am self employed and work from my home office(read home), and thats what I usually wear when I am working, because I want to be comfortable when I am sitting programming and oh no one visiting 
Maybe PJs should have been an option, but since it wasn't I voted for Anything goes.
Anybody else in the league?

Well I work from home, too, sometimes, but I also have my own office downtown, in a building shared with lawyers and financial services offices. However, I can go to my downtown office in my underwear if I want to, despite my neighbors' raising their eyebrows.
I don't think I've tried that yet, although it's been done by others here before. Then again, what goes on behind the closed door of my office, ... nobody knows but me!

I work from home as well. I usually wear t-shirt and shorts. Of course my wife chews me out because I wear the same set of shirts and shorts at the top of the clean pile. One day she decided to flip the pile around so I'd wear casual shirts and pants. I was 1/2 hour late for work looking for my uniform.
As appealing as leather chairs may be to some. When you work from home and have to run downstairs in a hurry to pick up a call, they can be the most uncomfortable chairs in the world especially when it quite warm in the office.

I voted for anything goes but you will rarely see me in anything less than business casual (unless I am working after midnight - then anything goes). If it was up to me I'd wear a suit and tie to work every day but I was actually told not to dress up that much ...
