We are talking Microsoft right?
In 2015, when Edge was introduced, Microsoft would have had about 30,000 people working in Sales and Marketing.
I am guessing their brainstorming a new product name probably did not circle around complex higher mathematics.
While something like 'edgy' would seem like more of a starting point.
No idea what facts are behind the following but it suggests it is closer to what I suggested.

OK, I realize that a directed graph of text nodes with edges linking them is completely irrelevant to the name 'Edge'. The coincidence of graph edges and a the name of a tool for navigating these edges is fortuitous.
Then I am probably wrong about 'Lynx' being in any way inspired by 'links'.
Or Ford 'Ka' being inspired by 'car'.
Or the Amazon arrow running from A to z bearing any symbolic meaning.
Or that Californian Sun Maid raisins are made by the sun.
I am as well probably wrong about 'web' being inspired by a spider web.
The name of the WATFOR compiler is has no relationship to the phrase 'What for?'
BASIC is a pure abbreviation of 'Beginner's Allpurpose Symbolic Image Code'; the name is certainly not any hint to the simplicity of the language.
The name of the drink 'Coke' was not chosen for its dark color, almost like the mineral.
Or for that sake, that these rectangular screen areas and the 'Windows' name of an OS is in any way related. The name similarity is a pure coincidence.
Or ... possibly ... Maybe marketing people love to leave some 'Easter eggs' in their marketing material, stuff that isn't immediately visible to everyone. And maybe they like to keep it that way, like a semi-hidden secret. So in their official responses, they do not tell openly where the Easter eggs are hidden. From the comments to my initial post, it looks as if not very many have found the Edge Easter egg.

That is correct, actually. "Coke" is an abbreviation of "Coca Cola", which derives from its original recipe that included cocaine and kola.

So, these days I have a few medical issues I'm working on... I try to login to my doctor's portal, and it's unable to handle Opera. Oh really? 40 years after all this got started, and you won't handle opera? Get it to come up in Edge - finally - and the f'ing icon is using my login information. I think not.
Off to vpn for me.

when I pull up Edge on my base iron laptop, in the upper left of the browser, it seems to know who I am - my base Office 365 image is up there smiling at me. This appears to be the coordinated effort at MS trying to get me to login all the time. Not going to happen.

Sounds like the app might allow single sign-on (SSO).

No sir, all of local accounts on machines are local, I refuse to use the MS based login. But I do think it has to do with Office 365 and Edge "cooperating."

A number of times, I've seen a message that "Edge is using my webcam", though Edge is not running.
That's why my daughter's have pasted an opaque sticker on their laptop webcams. No spying.

Click on that image, Other Profiles, Browse as Guest.
Or pick another profile instead of Guest.
Or use InPrivate mode (Ctrl-Shift-N).
These profiles are only (primarily) used to determine what credentials the browser should offer to submit, should you be browsing the same sites as different users.
Chrome does the same thing.

yeah, and I don't use chrome  . The biggest issue with MS and these online accounts are the merging of all the data. Apple is the premier leader in this space, and even they f'it up.

Microsoft claims to have ripped out all the bits that send data back to Google. So there's that. I believe at least that much.
Of course that's all been replaced by bits that send data back to them (and then some), but on the other hand, the OS is more than capable of doing the same. If it's gotta go somewhere, I'd rather have this data go to one company than multiple - one of which being the biggest ad broker that has ever existed.

truth - everyone is sharing engines these days.
However, Microsoft has started doing more of their historical antics. First, edge naturally assumes I want to share all of my history across all of my devices, etc. I really don't want to do that unless I really want too. Another example, for decades, default programs were driven by the control panel default programs area. MS in it's "wisdom" has now buried a default browser selection inside of Outlook.
They are just f'ing around. Like when they moved Documents from your local drive to under the OneDrive.

Yeah they're really trying hard to push people to their services they're eventually going to want to charge extra for. I wonder if it's gonna take another lawsuit to get them to stop that. It's getting annoying to an extreme. I think the current strategy is to annoy people until they just give in.

Assuming it's not just a cache issue from a previous visit...
One of the things Microsoft always did with IE and now Edge was integrate it with Active Directory. You ever notice on some internal sites at work you don't have to login when using Edge but you do in other browsers? That's on purpose. That's usually through AD though, so just guessing even if it's a un-authenticated or non-domain login that peeps can still query enough data to get some account info in Edge regardless.
It's supposed to be a "feature", but it's always been there in some form.

IMO Firefox and Brave are the only browsers that even remotely pretend to care about your privacy. I say this as a dude who uses Chrome.
