The recipe:
- Clear blue sky, perfect weather.
- Autobahn, four lanes heading out of town.
- Little traffic. Almost no trucks, just some eggheads on the way to the research center and taxis on the way to the airport.
- Speed limit lifted after passing the exit to the research center and the eggheads have gone.
- Car back to its old shape. No more errors and two week old tires.
- Judas Priest: One Shot at Glory
The result: A few precious minutes of unexpected fun and blowing the dirt from crawling around in the normal traffic out of the motor. Too bad the little car is done at 210 - 220 km/h.

Mine is done at 135, I consider you lucky. I managed to reach 143 on a downward slope with the wind on my back.

My first car was like that, a tiny Renault 5 with devastating 44 horses under the hood.
Maybe it was just a donkey, but it got me everywhere without ever letting me down.

My family had one too, it ended its glorious service in 2003. My first car was a 1998 Fiat Seicento, 39 HP, a worn out driver seat and an acceleration quite unbelievable for that car - at 110 it reached her limit though.
Now I have a 2003 Fiat Punto, originally 44HP but with GPL it goes down a notch. Overall a satisfying car but overtakes are mostly out of its reach and on motorways it's a tad underwhelming.

Lancia did make nice cars. I'd really like to get my hands on a Lancia Delta HF Integrale. I also love the Lancia Lybra, but I'm too clumsy to drive a car that big.

They made cars that were wonderful to drive, but ... they corroded if you mentioned the word "rain", were built out of "whatever was handy" on the day1, and had some "interesting" design ideas2
Fun while they lasted though.
1: To get a spare part for my HPE you had to take the old one with you as I found when I needed a new distributor cap. What was there, went on. If it wasn't there, something else did.
2: The heated air vents were right in front of the gear lever, with the result that it glowed in the dark in cold weather; to remove one of the spark plugs you had to dismantle the cooling system.

I just checked (looking to see if any HPEs survived, alas not) and there are two in the English Auto Trader ATM, starting at £23,000 ... both left hand drive. So it's possible you might find one ...

Welcome to Italian manifacturing, have a nice stay. Some things never change. That didn't.

It was common for Italian cars before the 1990s, there were special treatments done aftermarket - usually scrubbing to bare metal, covering with a waterproof base varnish and then painting over it. Older cars had the paint straight on the metal, with the results we know.

A week ago we took the Autobahn too, via Bocholt and Aachen to Vaals, but that did not went as smoothly as we thought, we had some traffic jams sadly

They have nice 'Teufelsenf' mustard in Aachen which goes well with the cheese, I bought some from a peddler in the city center. To my surprise he could speak Dutch, and it turned out he even had studied Dutch.
So I can only conclude that this historic city is certainly worth a visit

Ahhh, I remember a similar ride like that on the Autobahn, perfect weather, no traffic worth mentioning.
From Karlsruhe to Mannheim on the A65 in about 15 min => +/- 200km/h, then via Kaiserslautern to Trier at a more sedate 160/170. Unlike Belgian traffic absolute and total Freude am Fahren

Faster than I ever dared in my '94 Miata, which was not known for speed. Perfectly straight state highway, crystal blue skies, no traffic. Ran it up to 108 mph (174 km/h) before the suspension started to feel a little shaky. Still, great fun.
Best fun I ever had in the car was playing chase-the-rabbit with a brand new, high-end Camaro through a twisty country road. By the end of it he was slaloming through both lanes trying to keep up with me, while I was hugging the right lane like it was my long-lost child .

I'm afraid I start to freak out at about 160 kph. Best speed drive I ever had was on the Spanish tollway during their recession, all the truck drivers were unwilling to pay the tolls.
The 3 speeding tickets I got later that year did dampen the fun but the little Audi 3 happily trundled down the freeway at 160.
