It's possible. Almost any PC is going to be fast enough to write stories, and you don't need fancy formatting. Some authors install software to disable internet use on their computer while they're writing to avoid distractions. An old warhorse with no internet connection and a clicky keyboard may have been perfect. George RR Martin uses an old DOS machine with Wordstar, and Gaiman prefers to do first and second drafts with pen and paper.
I'm sure he had backups- and newer, shinier computers for other things. But those backups are probably gone too.
There's always more Discworld fanfic to read.
