Businesses don't have time, finance or resources to train .net developers any more as they're all curtting costs, and Universities seem to teach Java, PHP and Javascript as it's much cheaper to set up labs with Linux than Windows [although with .net core that might change, though I wouldn't bank on it].

I agreed. If an employer willing to give you opportunity to learn in their environment , that awesome. Else you have to setup lab and study and still need to get a job to gain real world experience

Agree 100%! There are a lot of youngsters out there who haven't really considered programming or who think they've missed the boat..
We should look to train our local young people before taking the easy (and cheaper - at least in the short term) option and hiring from elsewhere (be it another city, region or country).
Ah, I see you have the machine that goes ping. This is my favorite. You see we lease it back from the company we sold it to and that way it comes under the monthly current budget and not the capital account.

Probably doing part-time work in shops, bars, restaurants or menial office work.
I worked in electronics for about 14 years before moving into software. I'd been writing software all the time, and when I heard an advert on the local radio about a recruitment event for software developers I decided to go along. I don't have a degree, but I took some of my code along with me and was the only person to get offered a job that day.
The rest is history (so far)..

I could be one - I'm no junior developer but .NET is almost unexplored land for me, as I only made a C# plugin for VisualStudio (it shows areas of memory as 8 or 16 bit grayscale images, gamma-contrast correction, zoom, painting of arrays indicating colums-rows or rows-column, saving the buffer) and a C++/CLI interface to load a C++ DLL in a C# project (the DLL is loadable both from native and from .NET).

It's been my experience (since I didn't start out in programming school) that the main to job qualifications are:
1) A minimum of 15 years experience in (fill in)
2) A maximum age of 25 years old.

.Net developers are born senior, that's why 
Jokes aside, it may have to do with the fact that there must be a shortage of labor where you live. It's the same with me. And worse, I've seen a lot of juniors been hired as seniors.
I've seen a lot of them come and fail because the hiring process is flawed.

Your local College Computing department may have a [insert collective noun for students] of students that would love to have an apprenticeship. I have chosen to teach VB.Net at my College because VB is a professional tool [discuss] and, well, it's .Net and easily transferrable to C#.
