Apologies for not knowing which forum this belongs in.
I need to be pointed to the proper place for updating it (actually the PHP part), but I don't seem to be able to google my way to it, their forum/wiki was rather barren (via sourceforge). I'm talking about methodology for updating.
Current option is to back up all of the website's data and add-ons, install newest version of Vertigo, and then paste back what ought to be pasted back in. I'd really like to just pop a new version of php in and get on with life.

Can't say I have man. I've been using PHP so long, I'm just used to installing it manually.
I will say that (out of the box, things can be tweaked) you'll find PHP runs quicker on Linux. Not sure if you have a specific reason to use Windows, unless it's just meant to ease the transition into it... then rock and roll man. If you can tweak Windows policies like a ninja, you'll be just fine running it in Windows. YMMV
Oh, also... for the Windows version only... make sure you use the latest version of PHP possible to ensure you have 64-bit integer support.

It's a Windows shop - so it's a Windows 2008R2 server. It runs quite well and it's quite impressive how real software (an entire LAMP setup) starts in a second or two).
There are some features that looked attractive in later versions of php.
Actually, you've given me an interesting idea. The current Vertrigo install is 32 bit (all they had at the time). I suppose I could install the 64-bit version - which, being contained in a different folder, etc., would co-exist. When I feel safe I can wipe the old one.
A two-for-one fix. Does this sound like it will work?

Well, I wasn't trying to turn it into a Windows vs Linux thing (although I do have my opinions on that  ). Just saying, out of the box there's like quite a few more security policies, etc. that need to be tweaked on Windows to get PHP churning the best that can be - as compared to Linux.

Totally. It's zippy. PHP that is. Gets even zippier with caching and bytecode compilation.

If you're used to C# then it's also essential to go with the latest. PHP is awesome, there's a function to do just about everything in the world. It's fast, platform independent. But it also has as a smaller dev team and took a bit of time implementing some of the design features C# has. So, going latest will help you out in that regards.

Yes, different versions of PHP can coexist. Also, even on IIS if you want... you'll need to run it as a FastCGI or CGI module though if you want to use two different versions of PHP on the same web server / site though, and of course make sure your environment variables and path point to the version you want to use by default on the command line.

No such complications. Vertrigo includes an Apache server - and that's the one I use as the web server. The second installation will (I hope) not even be aware of the first. I just copy over the relevant files (the website content) and hope the SQLServer drivers can be found or made happy.
I'm a coder - not much into server play - so I really just want to upgrade. What I'll try on my local machine is to download php (from php.net ?) and see if it will safely overwrite that instance. If so, on to the live server. Even the 32-bit version if far from the rate determining step for any performance problems.
Also - I've played with C# a little, but I'm C++/C . PHP looking like C is one of the things I really like about it. That, and being able to make classes, too!
