Well, I wasn't trying to turn it into a Windows vs Linux thing (although I do have my opinions on that Smile | :) ). Just saying, out of the box there's like quite a few more security policies, etc. that need to be tweaked on Windows to get PHP churning the best that can be - as compared to Linux.

It runs quite well and it's quite impressive how real software (an entire LAMP setup) starts in a second or two).

Totally. It's zippy. PHP that is. Gets even zippier with caching and bytecode compilation.

There are some features that looked attractive in later versions of php.

If you're used to C# then it's also essential to go with the latest. PHP is awesome, there's a function to do just about everything in the world. It's fast, platform independent. But it also has as a smaller dev team and took a bit of time implementing some of the design features C# has. So, going latest will help you out in that regards.

A two-for-one fix. Does this sound like it will work?

Yes, different versions of PHP can coexist. Also, even on IIS if you want... you'll need to run it as a FastCGI or CGI module though if you want to use two different versions of PHP on the same web server / site though, and of course make sure your environment variables and path point to the version you want to use by default on the command line.
