Am I the only one who thinks the only thing they did was demonstrate that they can't accurately machine score compression quality?

Looking at the comparison image at the top of the article Google's 4 Artificial Idiocy compression algos all degrade the house number more than the legacy jpeg algorithm they're competing against. The only dubious quasi-win they achieved was at the lowest bit rate they successfully concealed almost all evidence of their data destruction while the legacy algorithm clearly showed that it was destroying data with a pile of ugly artifacts. At 1 bit per pixel the legacy algo had a barely readable number, the others all smoothed it back into illegibility. At 2 bpp, the new algos did a better job of suppressing compresion artifacts around the number; but at the price of making much less readable. D'Oh! | D'Oh! | D'Oh! | D'Oh! | D'Oh! | D'Oh! | D'Oh! | D'Oh! |
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?
--Zachris Topelius

Training a telescope on one’s own belly button will only reveal lint. You like that? You go right on staring at it. I prefer looking at galaxies.
