Unfortunately, in my experience, if you leave the recommended safe distance then other cars overtake and fill the gap. If you then slow down to reopen the gap, another one fills it. If you took this to the limit, then you'd end up with the hand brake on!

I don't think that safe distances are still a part of the UK driving test. But, for us oldies ...
At x miles per hour
Reaction distance = x feet
Breaking distance = x * x / 20 feet
Safe distance = Reaction distance + Breaking distance
So, at 20 mph, safe distance = 20 + 20 * 20 / 20 = 40 feet
and at 70 mph, safe distance = 70 + 70 * 70 / 20 = 315 feet
(For the test, we just had to remember the answers, but I created the above formula which I found was easier to use than remembering a set of numbers)
