I always display all extensions. Because searching for a file-type by watching at the document type column is slower than seeing a filename directly with its extension.

It is one of the first things I do when setting up a Windows PC (even when it is not mine).
Not only to know like you what kind of file it is but also for security reasons.

Same thing. It's normally one of the first things I change (even on other people's computer if they ask me to fix something  )
I really don't understand why hiding extensions is the default...

Ah... that helps explains why, when opening files, they offer the option to "Always perform this action when handling files of this type"
It would be a shame if I cut the life short of a malicious executable. All lives matter!

Seriously, though, I think it comes from the philosophy that non-techie users don't understand or need the added complexities. It lets them focus instead on the pleasant and descriptive "Type" column. Reducing the amount of information is all touchy feely.
Me, I've always been too much of a control freak. I don't like hidden things. Causes stress.

It is the default because average Joe User doesn't know what the extensions mean. And face it, there are more Joe Users than developers by at least three orders of magnitude (if not more).

I remember when I was a kid and the first time I came upon a friends computer where file extension was hidden. Really confused the heck out of me when I was trying to crack patch a game on his computer.
I cant see any use in hiding file extension.

Another alternative is to skip Explorer. I moved to Total Commander ages ago and never looked back.

Agreed - unfortunately, I have to help setup up lots of computers for my client when we do an install, so I have to deal with Explorer.

Same here, I only use Explorer on computers I don't have ownership of. TotalCmd helps me in everyday work so much, I was very happy when I discovered my company has a license.

No way! I not only hide extensions, but I hide filenames too! Just give me a funny-looking icon to happily double-click... Because I totally trust MS's built-in antivirus to keep my computer clean!
Seriously though... Yeah... I think all geeks disable that "hide extensions" garbage. Programs can mess with file associations to change what shows in the "Type" column, but the file extension itself never changes.

I am another one who sets my computer to always display all extensions. I hate not knowing what a file really is.
Just because the code works, it doesn't mean that it is good code.
