Giving thanks for a successful harvest was a tradition imported from Europe. It is celebrated when the harvest happens; in Canada, that is October, in the U.S., November.
From Canada, live in the U.S. - celebrate both! Next Saturday, will be with 50 or so people for 'Canadian Thanksgiving', in November, will be in West Virginia providing and serving Thanksgiving dinner.

Since yesterday, when I try to update Windows Defender definitions, I get a "Connection failed" error. Has anybody else experienced the same?
Note: I can manually download the definitions file and install it by hand, but I cannot do it from within Defender.

Does it work from Windows Updates in control panel?
|
|
|
|

No, same problem. This started to occur after I upgraded to Windows 10 on Saturday. By the way, on Win 10 there is no update icon in the Control Panel. You get a "Settings" icon where you check for all possible updates.

So today is Columbus Day here in the United States. As school children, we are taught that Christopher Columbus is "the greatest explorer of all time because he discovered our home", which is really just a nice way of saying "he was a gold grubbing European that accidentally discovered an entire hemisphere and didn't realize it, but really he didn't even do that because the Vikings had already found it".
Luckily, The Oatmeal is here to set the record straight: Columbus Day[^]
(Yes, I realize this comic is a couple years old and has probably already been posted. No, I don't care.)

Who landed first, Columbus or Amerigo Vespucci?
If it was Columbus, should have been called Columbia, isn't it? Or, that domain name was already taken

I thing Vespucci got to the mainland where CC only made the islands.

Columbus - he thought he was in India all the time. He was there for the money not for Geography... Vespucci looking at the cartographed coast lines noticed that it was fairly different from India.

Neither. Upon each of their arrivals, at completely different locations, they spotted a mysterious blue box and a dorky looking fellow in a bowtie taking pictures of them.

Yes, that was one of the early names, but it didn't stick, other than in the District of Columbia.
