Only some places are that way. It's for efficiency (or laziness). It's much faster to drive and deliver mail than to walk it to every front door.

Since I live next to the Post Office, we don't have mailboxes, we get free PO boxes. So, I guess I can walk into the Post Office wearing my robe without looking like a mental patient, but I wouldn't really try it.

A few years back, a friend went out the back door in his bathrobe to feed the dogs. The door closed behind him and locked. Then, he heard his wife and children heading out the front door on the way to school and work. He tried to get their attention, to no avail.
As they started down the road, he threw his slipper at them in an attempt to alert them.. still nothing.
He didn't have a cell phone on him, so went to the neighbours house and asked to use her phone. He called his wife's work and left a message for her. The neighbour then informed him that her husband had left her and she was lonely.....
He decided to wait at home, in the cold (it was winter, so probably mid 30's F) for his wife.
She got the message and drove home, but couldn't stop laughing at him and still laughs about it when we mention it.
