Have you tried putting your old hard drive into your new machine and booting off that just to export everything? If it's blue screening it's probably an issue other than the hard drive.

It's not very well known, but Outlook, Excel, etc have their own 'safe mode'...some addons make Office programs unstable.
In Windows 8.x, right click the 'start' button, go Run, in the box type:
outlook.exe /safe
...and Outlook will run without the addons.
You could do that from a command prompt as well, I guess.

Thanks for the idea, but I kow of all the parameters available withthe Office programs. And in this case I can't get Windows to boot so can't try these anyway.

What happens if you just take the disk and set it up with the new computer to boot from it? Does it crash there as well?
Your old computer might not boot again, but the old windows installation might if it's running on another hardware

Now that I have copied all the data and settings off the HDD it may well be worth trying it in another machine. Don't care if the drivers don't work. Just that I can get Outlook up long enough to get the contacts out.

I second booting the HDD in another system. I'd go straight into safemode if you can because otherwise it will reboot a few times to swap drivers out, and if the hard disk is the problem that might end up really screwing everything up.

There seems to be some confusion here. OST files are only used when Outlook is connected to an Exchange Server account, if you are using IMAP or POP then there are only PST files. Contacts and Calendars are usually stored in the default PST file.
Perhaps you should look at the excellent EM Client[^] which will import PST files without Outlook being installed.
If on the other hand you really have an OST file (with a recent date on it) then you must have an Exchange account somewhere and your contact data will be there (OSTs are only an offline copy of the Exchnge Server folders).
Quoting Billy-Bob Gates:
Outlook Data Files (.ost) are used when you have an Exchange account and want to work offline or use or use the default Cached Exchange Mode. This type of data file is also used for accounts that you set up with the Outlook Connector for Outlook.com (formerly Hotmail). Outlook Data Files (.ost) are always copies of items that are saved on a mail server and don’t need to be backed up like Outlook Data Files (.pst).

Been a Sys Admin for the last 15 years and a programmer for 11 before that. Know the difference and where everything is located. Definitely an OST.
Thanks for the tip on EM Client, looks like it will be useful for clients issues in the future.

Yes, notably for the Windows 8.1 Mail app which will not import Outlook Express (another "feature" from Microsoft).

You probably thought of this.
But what about booting in safe mode without networking?
Maybe the few extra minutes you could dump what you need?
Also, check the bluescreen details. Maybe you could disable whatever device is the underlying cause.
