I've had two (the first and second generation versions). I wouldn't touch them again. I prefer my iPad.

N73 Music Edition. Until I lost it.
If I had that phone I would have never even switched to Android. I liked that one!

Even I owned a Nokia N73. Was the best phone of it's time for the price range. Now I own a Samsung Galaxy S2. I had to buy that as nokia did not have any new phone 2 years back that could've given competition to Android.
As for the tablet..
if you would be comfortable using a 10" one then I would suggest Nexus 10 (2). I've heard that it's quite good.
Apple may give you the feel of a lag-free user interface but android will give you the freedom of usability.. apple is a bit(read, a lot :P) restrictive..
Nexus7 as suggested by @_Damian-S_ is also a great choice if 7" is good enough for you!
and yeah! galaxy note 10 exists.. it's a tab with a stylus.. it is more suitable for artists/designers, in short who could make good use of the stylus.
As for the ipad retina, it was first introduced in the 3rd generation of the iPad.. the current is the 5th generation(iPad Air)..

iPad retina is actually iPad 4
I'd simply go for the fastest processor above all else - but any of those are fine really.
The retina display is nice, but non retina isn't at all bad.
tepending on their technical bent, you could go with another tablet - but:
iPads are standard as they come - can't go too wrong, whihle otehr brands vary so much between models and OS versions, there's a lot more tinkering required (IMHO) as getting help fron one android user isn't so easy if they've another model
I love the Nexus 7, personally, but wouldn't buy one for me mum (even if she wasn't dead)
If someone offers you a free Windows 8 tablet, just run, very fast indeed.

Sir, the retina display started from the 3rd generation of the iPad

Yes, started. but the 3rd Gen iPad is no longer sold, so if you were buying a retina it would be a 4th Gen

okayy.. that ways... :P

btw ipad 4 isn't the only ipad with retina display... the iPad Air also features the retina screen..
.:>GSN<:.

But it is called the "iPad air". The iPad is called the "iPad with retina display"
And there are two iPad minis, one has a retina display - and is called "iPad Mini with retina display" while the otehr is just called the "iPad Mini"
The op was confused about which iPad to get - you're not helping, I don't think

I'd agree with Damian - Nexus 7 rather than Apple.

That Apple releases a product every 10mins so every fanboi out with more money than sense has to upgrade to keep up with the cool kids.
I know that you/everyone knows this, but it's so egregious that it is worth stating explicitly, and also I rarely pass up the opportunity to screed.

You're insane. Apple's release cycle is probably slower than any of their major competition. Certainly slower than Samsung, HTC, Motorola, Dell, etc... The Google Nexus is probably an exception but then its also starting to become a bit dated.
