There was a bit on the BBC news this morning about the PlebGate tedium, saying that it has "eroded public confidence in politicians" - I didn't know there ever was any public confidence in politicians!

Well, there are some that are crazy enough to do it..
Anyway, I love my profession, wish I could make more money out of it, still I stepped down (financially and nothing else) when changing jobs so I could work as a trainee and then become a programmer. I'm not making as much money as before, but I'm definitely happier.

Don't listen to those others, they are developers and most of us have a low opinion of PMs. IMHO a good PM should also have been a BA on the way, I also think a good developer should be able to do the work of a BA so make sure you have those analysis and design skills.
PM is paperwork, meetings, organising the business and cajoling bastard programmers into doing their job and then more meetings. If you have a taste for that then go for it. If you desire to make a career through management then it is probably a good step. Personally I dislike the idea of a frontal lobotomy and paperwork is something I avoid like the plague.

You're just a cynical old bugger
My current PM is an ex coder then a top notch BA and now moved into PM, bloody hopeless at looking after the people part but does an excellent job getting the work done. I've had 2 top quality BA/PM over the last 9 years with this company and count my blessings for them.
