Perhaps SymanShite and MacCrappy will embrace like that photo of the alligator and snake that both died; the alligator killed the snake with a bite and the snake choked the alligator to death. Perhaps other AVs will nuke them as well as it's long overdue.

Not while they still manage to persuade systems builder to ship "trial" versions with product. Even those are a PITA to remove - to the point where most people just don't bother...

Much of AV can be the same back end. A previous employer added AV into or desktop product. We had a few vendors offering us their av engine to rent per year/user. Bitdefender was one of them. It all comes down to the extra crap that is coded with the AV engine. It actually wasn't that hard to integrate and was incredibly cheap!

1) Every reputable online benchmark service I have read suggests Virus Scanning does not noticeably impact system performance
2) Every Fortunate company I have ever worked has crippled their machines with punitive virus scanning
At my current place of employment we have what is called "Thursday afternoon" where people just stop working because their PC's become completely unusable for the "Full scan" during normal days it is just 50% of one CPU and 1GB of ram. On Thursdays it can take 2 CPUS to 100%. Fortunately, I am special and actually have a workstation so I no longer have the Thursday blues.
But, long story short, since there is no such thing as perfect virus scan here is what I do:
1) Run Windows Defender routinely
2) Software and Hardware Firewall (PITA I know)
3) Use Firefox or other browser that scans downloads for known viruses
4) Don't use IE and Outlook
5) Purchase a separate "pron" laptop that you just reflash
6) Don't click strange links
7) Make data only back-ups as well as system back-ups.
8) Routinely run a virus scan on your machine (maybe once a month) then uninstall
My work laptops and desktops have never had a virus using this methodology. I am not saying I will get one but the exposure is minimal and the risk of loss is less than the cost of going the "normal route"

I have much of what you suggest in place with the exception of Outlook. I have that because I have no other and I'm even less trustful of gmail, hotmail and the ilk.
We also used malwarebytes at work recently and it picked up a few "threats" which when we looked at them were false positives. I contacted their support about it and I was asked to post it to their forums which is not the way to do it. I don't want to sign up and waste time letting them know about their problem. That was unusual to say the least.
What made me a little wary of MSE was that I read somewhere that Microsoft don't "trust" it and up to then that's all I used. Perhaps I'm a bit sensitive about AV programs. I did use Avast a couple of years ago so I might go back to their freebie.

At work my wife had your "Thursday afternoon" experience every single day at noon for months. The only solution (until she got a newer PC) was to reboot when the forced full scan started making the system impossible to use or just go home..
At my work where I am the Admin I had a similar problem (but not as bad since I have an i7) with the company distributed Endpoint and a forced full scan for every user at every day at ~1:00 PM. It was very annoying to me because I have several million files so the scan takes 6+ hours. We have since found the registry keys to be able to disable the forced scans so for the most part this is not a problem.
In either case why on earth are full scans being set to default during normal working hours?

I to use MSE.
MSE uses a file mini filter driver to scan every file which is what slows things down.
Every time I search for files using WMI, MSE tags along and scans them too, slowing the process way down.
They also have a Scheduled task for running a scan at 1:40 am. It can also start a scan when it detects an idle condition.
They only way I can think of stopping it when it runs away with the system is to use task sheduler to cancel the scan.
I have not been able to test that idea yet.
Also there is a setting under the setting tab to limit the CPU usage. It seems to work so far.
They have also made strides to secure it to keep malware from shutting it down.
Also the user no longer has permmisions to shut it down either.

The Avast freebie installed ok. I tried to run it but it froze on startup inviting me to start the service. Clicked it, clicked it again. Nothing listed in services.msc. Few of the options were editable. The main UI was red. Tried to uninstall it. It told me it couldn't due to a problem. That's the whole bloody point of uninstalling sometimes; to fix a problem. I had to delete the folder in Program Files. Clicking uninstall then removed the entry in the ARP list. What a schlep.
I can see now why it's called Avast. It's a vast piece of crap. I will try Kaspersky. Maybe I'll cut my losses and head straight back to MSE, passing MacCrappy on the way.
