Sorry, this won't mean much to anyone outside the UK.

Above my head in the office is a TV showing the news. I can't hear it, but I can see it is following the three Police chiefs who have been summoned to explain their actions over the 'plebgate' affair to a panel of MPs.

Where did this thing come from? I thought that unless you broke the law in this country you didn't have to account for your actions to anyone. Whilst I can understand public servants being called like today, and Chris Patten for the BBC previously (as this is ultimately reporting to your superiors), Murdoch has also been summoned and he doesn't even live here.

It's like being called to the headmaster's office and having the whole thing televised. I don't care for it, even though the three today do have some explaining to do.
