I would worry if you have CPU @ 100% on a dual machine. I would not be surprised if the OS took over and changed the settings to make sure that you app did not kill the box.
Is this Win2k server or Pro?

It runs correctly on Windows XP. The problem only seems to be located on Windows 2000 Server/Pro.
But I'm starting to think the same as you, in that the OS decides that the application is taking to much processing power and removes a CPU from the app.

I have a dir on my HDD that is 13,5Gb!!
It's named _RESTORE and is hidden. I don't know if WinME or Win2000 created this (I run both on the same computer) but do you know if there is important data in that file!?!??!
These files are listed inside the dir:
DISKCFG.DAT
SRDISKID.DAT
VxDMon.cfg
VxDMon.DAT
Is there any secure copy of data that is saved by Windows automaticly when crashes happen or what!?!?!?
How can I "run" these to restore the configurations!?!?! if it's necesarey!?

OK, reinstalled a couple of old HP Vectra's (166MHz Pentiums) with 52x CD-ROM's. I installed windows and the few other pieces of software they had from CD's with absolutely no problems.
I have all the latest patches applied from WindowsUpdate. There doesn't seem to be any conflicts or other problems according to Device Manager and System Information.
Now if I place a CD in the drive and either try to install it or copy a file off using Windows Explorer the machine freezes. Completely.
I have no idea why this is happening, what I last did before this started happening. Since I was able to install all the software originally I don't think it is a hardware problem.

It's been over a year now since I installed Win2K SP2 on this machine, and ever since I've been getting this error from DNS. I have tried every solution in the Knowledge Base, every recommendation I can find by searching Google, yet nothing works. I've read every tutorial on Win2K DNS ever published, and studied the Help files until I've gone nearly blind. It doesn't work. One last thing that I haven't tried, only because there's no way I can find to do it, is to implement a recommendation that I 'point Active Directory' to the DNS server. I can find no setting anywhere that matches this terminology - there is no 'DNS Server' setting in any of the Active Directory plugins. Where can I find this setting?

I don't know if this is really the place to post this, but here goes.
I am currently using IE 6.0 on a Windows 98 system (with all current updates). The OS was installed clean. I have also installed Netscape 7.0. Here is my problem:
Intermittantly IE 'hangs'. That is I can browse websites fine, until I click on a link (random) and the IE seems to 'pause' and load and load and load the website - as if the site is not responding. Then, after a period of maybe 3 &1/2 minutes, it loads the website no problem. This is not a network problem, as during the 3&1/2 minute pause I can start Netscape and load the site fine. In fact, this never occurs if I browse using Netscape. Furthermore, if I try entering http://www.hotmail.com in the address bar of IE, it WILL NOT load the site, ever. Again, Netscape 7.0 loads it trouble-free.
I have tried reverting to IE 5.5, but I continue to get the same results. I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

According to my ISP, there is a problem with IE6 SP1. For a long time I've thought I was the only one having trouble - every two days or so I click on a link and the whole server freezes, and nothing will fix it but a complete restart of the system. My ISP reports to me that every customer who has SP1 installed on IE6 is having the same problem. Microsoft has not acknowledged it, nor offerred a solution yet, and I have not found any third party that can confirm the problem or recommend a fix. Frustrating, eh? I am beginning to feel an attraction to penguins, for some odd reason...

There is a problem with IE6 SP1 the best way to sort this out is to uninstall the SP1.You can do this in XP\2k by going to add\remove programs but From XP\2K downwards the Service pack gets embeded into the operating system.So in that case its a Rinsatall of the operating system to get rid of this problem.

Good idea. According to my ISP, though, the remove programs option also wipes out the repair option and corrupts the IE6 installation on all the Win2K systems he's tried it on. Granted, he's not the sharpest tool in the shed, but he does keep good notes on what he's tried for his customers. I'm hopeful that MS will one day release a fix for the problem - re-installing the OS is not an attractive option.

ENVIRONMENT:
Win2k or XP Pro.
I've created an app that must be started at the beggining and that must be stopped at the end so the user cannot switch to any other app.
The main problem was to keep it secure.
In order to do so, I've created a service that installs two system wide hooks (one that controls the keyboard and other that controls the mouse).
QUESTION:
I need to know how to avoid that the OS shows the user the phrase: "press F8 keyboard to show the start menu options" (Notice that I've translated it and I've done it from my memory (it's almost sure that the phrase is not the same but the meaning yes...)).

Can anyone help me getting information regarding the handles and threads count for a process on WinNT/win2k/WinXP platform.
I need to get this infomration using c/c++ code just like the values which are shown in TaskManager. I could get information about CPU utilisation using performance counters. But how to go about the handles and threads??

You can get the handle and thread counts using performance counters (at least with PDH). You just have to have the right name for the performance object, which is easy to find using perfmon.

Sorry my other post was anonymous (I accidentally wasn't logged in)...
If you would like to find the names of the performance objects, click the Start Menu, then click Run, then type "perfmon". Now, you will see the performance monitor program. From here, you can click the "+" toolbar icon, and it will show you counters and all sorts of other information. You can even see a description of what each counter is actually counting. I have looked at Windows 98 and I believe the registry setting which store the Find Computer History is in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FindComputerMRU
and for Run history it is at
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RunMRU
I was wondering if anyone knows or can confirm the location of these keys in Windows XP and Windows 2000?

This is not possible. The code in the MBR is the very first thing executed when the computer is started, so no operating system is loaded at the time.

Hello All,
I have previously developed a device driver for Windows NT 4.0. That was in 1999. I've since moved on to other projects. 4 years on now, I'm currently requird to port my original WinNT device driver to Windows XP.
I'm wondering if thw Windows NT device driver source codes (written in C) can still be used in WinXP ?
Has anyone done such porting before ?

For months I've been fighting two problems, on two different systems. I finally made some headway that I should pass on to those who tried to help resolve them.
One is a problem with unreliable printing on a WinXP network. Shared printers would work for a while, albeit badly, then stop responding. I finally solved it this week. In the Add Printer wizard you are offerred a couple of ways to assign a printer. Using the \\hostname\printername method is the first choice in the list, via a tree directory, so that's the method I've been using. Bad choice - it doesn't work. Lower down the list are the hosts on the network, each with a sub-entry for its shared printer. Selecting those shares solved the problem completely, though I have no idea why.
The second is my home Win2K server. Since the last Windows Update it has been freezing up - no errors, no events, no Dr. Watson - every two days or so. Yesterday I talked with my ISP, and he's been plagued by the same problem, both on his servers, and on his customers' PCs. The one thing they all have in common, without exception, is that they all have SP1 on IE6. For all of them, the problem started when SP1 was applied. He's tried to roll back the SP, but that corrupts IE6, and the Add/Remove Programs 'Repair' option disappears, so he has to reinstall the entire program from scratch to recover. It doesn't appear to make any difference which version of the OS is running, either - WinXP has a much improved error handling system and usually doesn't need to be rebooted, but it does stop and restart explorer.exe when IE freezes the system. It's not yet a solution, but it seems to be an explanation, at least.
I'm going to ask him to survey his customers to see if we can determine whether there are any who have IE6SP1 who have not experienced the problem. Maybe we can figure out a resolution that way, since MS hasn't ackowledged it or provided a fix yet. Or maybe we'll find out something completely different - who knows at this stage? It could be something in his network interacting with IE... If anyone's interested, I'll post the fix, if any, when we find it.

I *think* I've installed IE6SP1, but I use Mozilla as my default web browser, and haven't noticed the problem you mention, so It could be a case that IE has to be used lots until it eventually bogs down and dies.
Have you tried just leaving your computer on, but not using it at all, to see if it crashes when unattended and unused?
