Sorry my other post was anonymous (I accidentally wasn't logged in)...

If you would like to find the names of the performance objects, click the Start Menu, then click Run, then type "perfmon". Now, you will see the performance monitor program. From here, you can click the "+" toolbar icon, and it will show you counters and all sorts of other information. You can even see a description of what each counter is actually counting. For a description of the naming scheme, check here[^]. If you'd like to take a look at the APIs required to do this, I would start here:

I have looked at Windows 98 and I believe the registry setting which store the Find Computer History is in

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FindComputerMRU

and for Run history it is at

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RunMRU

I was wondering if anyone knows or can confirm the location of these keys in Windows XP and Windows 2000?

I have a query regarding MBR. Can you help me in any possible way.

I want to execute a program along with MBR (ie. before MBR loads). The executable copy of program is kept in my hard drive itself.
eg. I want to call C:\myprg.exe along with MBR.

This is not possible. The code in the MBR is the very first thing executed when the computer is started, so no operating system is loaded at the time.

Hello All,

I have previously developed a device driver for Windows NT 4.0. That was in 1999. I've since moved on to other projects. 4 years on now, I'm currently requird to port my original WinNT device driver to Windows XP.

I'm wondering if thw Windows NT device driver source codes (written in C) can still be used in WinXP ?

Has anyone done such porting before ?

For months I've been fighting two problems, on two different systems. I finally made some headway that I should pass on to those who tried to help resolve them.

One is a problem with unreliable printing on a WinXP network. Shared printers would work for a while, albeit badly, then stop responding. I finally solved it this week. In the Add Printer wizard you are offerred a couple of ways to assign a printer. Using the \\hostname\printername method is the first choice in the list, via a tree directory, so that's the method I've been using. Bad choice - it doesn't work. Lower down the list are the hosts on the network, each with a sub-entry for its shared printer. Selecting those shares solved the problem completely, though I have no idea why.

The second is my home Win2K server. Since the last Windows Update it has been freezing up - no errors, no events, no Dr. Watson - every two days or so. Yesterday I talked with my ISP, and he's been plagued by the same problem, both on his servers, and on his customers' PCs. The one thing they all have in common, without exception, is that they all have SP1 on IE6. For all of them, the problem started when SP1 was applied. He's tried to roll back the SP, but that corrupts IE6, and the Add/Remove Programs 'Repair' option disappears, so he has to reinstall the entire program from scratch to recover. It doesn't appear to make any difference which version of the OS is running, either - WinXP has a much improved error handling system and usually doesn't need to be rebooted, but it does stop and restart explorer.exe when IE freezes the system. It's not yet a solution, but it seems to be an explanation, at least.

I'm going to ask him to survey his customers to see if we can determine whether there are any who have IE6SP1 who have not experienced the problem. Maybe we can figure out a resolution that way, since MS hasn't ackowledged it or provided a fix yet. Or maybe we'll find out something completely different - who knows at this stage? Smile | :)

It could be something in his network interacting with IE... If anyone's interested, I'll post the fix, if any, when we find it.

I *think* I've installed IE6SP1, but I use Mozilla as my default web browser, and haven't noticed the problem you mention, so It could be a case that IE has to be used lots until it eventually bogs down and dies.

Have you tried just leaving your computer on, but not using it at all, to see if it crashes when unattended and unused?

I notice the Power Management functionality ("SpeedStep") for Intel mobile CPUs has been "built into" WinXP and the controls for it removed from the user. Does anyone know if it is possible to change the settings somewhere in the registry?

Hi everbody.
This time I need help about FTP service in IIS.
I have a folder "c:\Publications " that I want to open this folder to FTP connection. And anyboby would put his/her publication to it without promting any user name or password. Also could not delete none of the items in this folder. People could reach my web site (in my computer that works XP proffesional) and it works without any problem.

Well
1) First make a virtual directory called anonymous in you ftp root which should point to c:\publications. you can do this from ISM ( microsoft control)
2) in ISM find out who the anonymous user for your web site is. say its IUSER
3) Not open explorer c:\
4) For Publications directory give write/read access to IUSER but only on that directory and not to its children.

Having write permission on that directory IUSER can upload and read files. But not having write permission on the children of that directory i.e. files and sub folders ... he can't delete any files.

Doesn't it disable to use task manager also for Admin group. I want to do it only for normal users.

Try right clicking on it and playing with the security settings.

Remove the read/execute rights for everyone by the admin group. That might work.

How can I luck my session instead of log off or switch user. I use XP professional.

You can "lock" your workstation, by hitting Ctrl+Alt+Delete, then hit Space or click the "Lock Computer" button.

That's not how it works on my machine. Did somebody configure your machine (like system administrator)? You can also try "Window Button"+L.

Definately sounds like his system has either been locked down or altered, maybe a custom GINA?

It's different in XP. You need to turn off the new flashy login screen in order for C+A+D to work as it did in previous versions of NT. (You might have to do something else too, maybe disable fast user switching too, not sure)

Hi,
I want to take simple statistics who use my computer.
My OS is XP professional. I want to take every logon session

user name
time log on
time log off

and pass them in a xls file or even text file.
I much more about know jscript than vbscript.
