Well, it looks like you are binding the DataList on page_load without checking Page.IsPostBack. So your data list will be regenerated on each refresh and all the values you typed will be reset.

This code is error prone. If e.Item.FindControl will return NULL if it can't find the textbox. So you get a NullReferenceException. A better code involves some sanity checking. Something like
TextBox txt = e.Item.FindControl("TextEditDesc") as TextBox;

Didnt realise events ran on the next load I presumed it would be something like:
PageLoad -> Postback button pressed -> Method Run for button -> PageLoad-> etc

In my dummy application, I added global.asax page and put a breakpoint in Session_Start method.
Control came to this method when application was brought up / run for the first time.
Thereafter when I entered a user id and password to start a session for the user, control never entered
the method session_start.
is this correct?
My requirement - whenever a user logs in get a certain information from the user's profile and save it onto a
static property. I thought I shall implement this is session_start, but the control never enters the method
session_start.
Please help me out.

Yes. It is behaving as expected.

Is this information shared between all your users or only for the current user who logged in? You should know how static variables behave before you start using it. Static variables got more lifetime and it is shared between users. So the user information kept on a static variable will be visible to all the users on your website.

Best place would be just after user authenticated. Once you authenticate user, take the necessary information and persist it. If information is only available to the current user, keep it in a session rather than static variables.

Its better to do this is SQL itself rather than at the webserver.
Bascially, you need to transpose the results.

Your best bet is to write a stand-alone application and schedule it using windows scheduler. But of course, you need to get access to server or server support folks has to do it.

You would probably be hosting your application in a shared hosting environment and in your scenario it is very rare that you would be given access to the scheduled task to run a stand alone application.
Best is to talk to your hosting provider, as in the shared hosting environment they usually provide you with something called Web Scheduler(atleast my hosting provider does  ). I am just learning ASP.NET. I have an ASP.NET application that I developed in Visual Studio. It contains some GrdiViews, and all works well when I execute the application within Visual Studio using F5.
However, when I try to execute the application from Internet Explorer using:
http://localhost/FirstExperiment
I get a HTTP 403 Message saying:
The website declined to show this webpage
HTTP 403
Most likely causes:
This website requires you to log in.
What am I missing or not doing correctly?

Have you deployed your website to IIS? When you run from VS, usually it starts on ASp.NET development web server. To make it work with IIS, use publish website option in VS. Alternatively, you can create a virtual directory in IIS and copy the files to the directory. In your case, virtual directory name would be FirstExperiment.
If you have done all the above and getting this error message means you have not enabled anonymous authentication in IIS. Right click on your virtual directory and allow anonymous access.

I have three textboxes and a button. When I click the button the numeric values in the textboxes should be added by javascript.If no value is entered in the textbox then it will not be added.I have using it in asp.net.The button should not be postback to the server.
How can I do this ?

Do the following:
- Use the property of the button OnClientClick="SumValues()" to do the summation on client side
- Add a javascript function SumValues() for example and make it sum the text values, to get the value of each textbox use getElementById in javascript.

i have a task of designing admin page
the admin has the ability of adding , removing , and editing a question area
question is an image with 3 check boxes

or how can i create the question dynamically when the admin inserts the pictures and the texts of the check boxes to me?

Dear All,
I have a problem in asp.net gridview control.I've put a textbox and an image button in the footer row.I want a popup window to be viewed when I click this image button.In this popup window there is a link button I want to pass its text to textbox in the parent window(that is in the gridview footer).

Hi there,
Look for something called Modal Dialog in Javascript, in which it gives you the ability to Show Popup Window with a content of your choise.
P.S: this is not a GridView Control problem !

If I have not misunderstood your problem, then you can achieve it by using following javascript code which should be attached with the client side onclick event of the linkbutton :
window.opener.document.getElementById("ctl00_ContentPlaceHolder1_txtBox").value = val;

I would suggest you to go back to basics and buy a good HTML/CSS book.
Anyways, what you need to do is to make the right and left border of cell transparent.

Hello ... I have a really, really simple scenario which i can't accomplish.
1) I have a WebControl called "BaseControl". In that WebControl i just place a panel (100px x 100px) and turn it's backcolor to green.
2) I create a second control which inherits the BaseControl. However when i place that control the green panel is not displayed.
I assume that the i can't inherit the html ? Is there a way i can do this ?
Is there a way i can achieve that simple inheritance ... or a workaround ?

You can inherit code, but not markup. If you want to have a hierarchical control model, you would need to design your base controls to use either manually rendered html with helper methods that inject html rendered from child controls, or use control compositing and helper methods that allow child controls to inject their own content.
