We have this this ActiveX OCX that we have to use for Username/Password, I can recieve the event that is called when you click submit in the ocx using VBScript.
Now, the thing that i want to do is store the user name and password in a session variable in ASP. Is that possible? Again, I have to use the OCX and it seems that the only way to get the Event is to use VBScript. Any Ideas?

Create two hidden form variables and extract the username and password combination and place if info in there when the "OK" or whatever button is clicked. When the form is submitted via GET or POST you can assign whatever the values are into the Session object from there. If you are using something like a password as data I would not use GET because the password could be cached in the URL by the browser.
The ActiveX control may provide functionality for this, but since I have no idea what this control is or how it works, it's pretty much impossible for me to tell you about it without more information on your part.

Well, first of all the control doesn't do anything but take in the name and password(it basically looks like a login box), and it's used for more important things. So when they click "OK" or whatever, an event is sent called "Sub Control_Verify()" and that "has to be"(so far) in Client-Side VBScript, so when that happens, can i "fake" a form and submit it automatically (inside of this event)? (which sounds like what you're trying to say....)

Hi
I know that global.asa should be forced to run if ie is opened on the site, but today a gremlin got in - the global.asa simply does not run anymore. Is there another way to force it?
Also, could it be because the project is in root web rather than a folder?

Your project has to be a registered application in IIS for the global.asa to work. If it suddenly stopped, try looking into that first.

We used visual interdev to create the project in the root directory, and visual interdev put global.asa there. It is a registered application, I tried removing it and readding it after your post, but no luck
All the others are working, but they are within folders, not on the root web. Could the fact that it's in the root web be killing it?

That's exactly the reason. IIS will create a virtual directory for the registered application. No directory; no app; no global.asa functionality. I believe you can do this for the wwwroot folder itself (I'd have to check on that to make sure.), but that'd have to be set-up on the server regardless - InterDev won't do it.

The Global.asa needs to be in a folder which has an ASP application "assigned" to it.
To check this go into IIS, right-click on the folder/virtual-dir, click Properties and check to see if the Application Name field is disabled. If it is, click the Create button to the right of it.

They are all confusing you!
You have to make sure the directory / virtualdirectory where global.asa resides is an Appilcation enabled. Applications are set per directory only and wont "fall" thru to subdirectories.

That's what I said already, and if you read the post you'll see that's not the issue anymore because the global.asa files do work for her, just not in the root via InterDev.

Anybody have experience with any of the cheap hosting companies around? I will need to have CGI capabilities for perl scripts, and an email address or two.
I've found easyspace, challengehost, hostsave. there seem to be countless providers. I'd love some feedback on any experience people have had from the under $10/month web hosting scene.

I had the same problem trying to find a webhost 3 years ago. I picked a company named DigiHost out of FL. http://www.digihost.com/ They have been in the business since 1994 and had what I was looking for. I have had little to no problems with them in 3 years. They have a what they call a start-up plan for $10 a month (prepaid for a year).

Just help me out. Am verrry new to ASP. Need to know what/how to install in my PC (mine is windows 2000). After that, how do I proceed creating my files?? What should I do??

Pull out your Windows 2000 CD and stick it in the CD-ROM (or DVD-ROM) drive. Open the control panel and go to "Add/Remove Programs." Once there, click the button on the left saying "Add/Remove Windows Components." Another dialog will pop up with a check for "Internet Information Services (IIS)." Click it and hit next. Go through the install and restart your machine.
IIS will now be running in the background. All your ASP pages will be in C:\inetpub\wwwroot by default. And, there will be a new control panel applet under "Administrative Tools" called the IIS Console Manager that will allow you to configure IIS as you see fit.
You can see the local webpages in your browser by typing in http://localhost.

I did that. And an icon is in the bottom telling that "Internt Information Servieces are running". What do I do next. Where is the code?? Where do I put it??

Ok next step is to go to your c:\inetpub\wwwroot and create a new file in there called test.asp
Inside that you put your ASP code. e.g. Response.Write "SPS Loves ASP".
Then in your web browser type http://localhost/test.asp and your ASP page should load.
Your next step would be to create a sub-folder under c:\inetpub\wwwroot, e.g. c:\inetpub\wwwroot\SPS
Then of course the web browser URL would be http://localhost/SPS/
That wwwroot folder is, as the name suggest, the root folder of your webserver. Any folders and files under it will be accesible via HTTP.

Okie.... I installed the IIS. I made sure that the IIS is running by seeing into the servieces. NOW, I tried just to type as http://localhost in my IE6. But it says as if there is no file on the server .. like that. I tried putting a Default.htm.. also Default.asp... none worked. What do I do now?? Reply please...

Thanks Mr. Paul. But, I had tried and solved the problem. Actually, I use proxy server to connect to the internet. I also didnt check the "bypass proxy for local server" option. This had confused the access to the IIS in the PC. Noe its working finr and all are alright.
Another help... do you have any IDE for ASP. Editing using the notepad seems not ok for me....

Well Visual Studio.NET (which you can buy from CodeProject for a very good price) is good and you of course get a lot more with it.
Otherwise you can try Dreamweaver, Homesite or 1stPage2000 (1stPage2000 is free, the others are not.)
