Anybody have experience with any of the cheap hosting companies around? I will need to have CGI capabilities for perl scripts, and an email address or two.
I've found easyspace, challengehost, hostsave. there seem to be countless providers. I'd love some feedback on any experience people have had from the under $10/month web hosting scene.

I had the same problem trying to find a webhost 3 years ago. I picked a company named DigiHost out of FL. http://www.digihost.com/ They have been in the business since 1994 and had what I was looking for. I have had little to no problems with them in 3 years. They have a what they call a start-up plan for $10 a month (prepaid for a year).

Just help me out. Am verrry new to ASP. Need to know what/how to install in my PC (mine is windows 2000). After that, how do I proceed creating my files?? What should I do??

Pull out your Windows 2000 CD and stick it in the CD-ROM (or DVD-ROM) drive. Open the control panel and go to "Add/Remove Programs." Once there, click the button on the left saying "Add/Remove Windows Components." Another dialog will pop up with a check for "Internet Information Services (IIS)." Click it and hit next. Go through the install and restart your machine.
IIS will now be running in the background. All your ASP pages will be in C:\inetpub\wwwroot by default. And, there will be a new control panel applet under "Administrative Tools" called the IIS Console Manager that will allow you to configure IIS as you see fit.
You can see the local webpages in your browser by typing in http://localhost.

I did that. And an icon is in the bottom telling that "Internt Information Servieces are running". What do I do next. Where is the code?? Where do I put it??

Ok next step is to go to your c:\inetpub\wwwroot and create a new file in there called test.asp
Inside that you put your ASP code. e.g. Response.Write "SPS Loves ASP".
Then in your web browser type http://localhost/test.asp and your ASP page should load.
Your next step would be to create a sub-folder under c:\inetpub\wwwroot, e.g. c:\inetpub\wwwroot\SPS
Then of course the web browser URL would be http://localhost/SPS/
That wwwroot folder is, as the name suggest, the root folder of your webserver. Any folders and files under it will be accesible via HTTP.
Try 4guysfromrolla.com for some good ASP tuts.

Okie.... I installed the IIS. I made sure that the IIS is running by seeing into the servieces. NOW, I tried just to type as http://localhost in my IE6. But it says as if there is no file on the server .. like that. I tried putting a Default.htm.. also Default.asp... none worked. What do I do now?? Reply please...

Thanks Mr. Paul. But, I had tried and solved the problem. Actually, I use proxy server to connect to the internet. I also didnt check the "bypass proxy for local server" option. This had confused the access to the IIS in the PC. Noe its working finr and all are alright.
Another help... do you have any IDE for ASP. Editing using the notepad seems not ok for me....

Well Visual Studio.NET (which you can buy from CodeProject for a very good price) is good and you of course get a lot more with it.
Otherwise you can try Dreamweaver, Homesite or 1stPage2000 (1stPage2000 is free, the others are not.)

I'm using...

If the button is pressed fn2 is called, then fn1 is called.
I would like JUST fn2 to be called. Is there any way I can stop fn1 from being called please?

If fn1 is called from the onclick handler of a parent element of the button, you need to set event.cancelBubble = true from within fn2:

LOL I love these type of questions: Why don't you just try it Rickard?
It does work and works quite well, but please just try things, you won't break anything if you do. Push buttons! That is how I learnt
Oh and you need to put in a filename as well, not just the filepath. e.g. myDataSet.SaveXml(Server.MapPath(".") + "\myfile.xml");

So then I asked this to be sure it was possible!
Well I used to try things before... but I can't get IIIs to run and the WebMatrix server is not a server with many conigurations possibilities!

Yeah sorry I snapped at you. I was on the phone to a PC-illeterate while typing my reply to your post and I was getting annoyed because she was SO SCARED to do anything. In all my years of using computers the worst thing that has happened is I lost a hard drive, and that was simply hardware failure. So I try to stress to people that the only way to learn is just to click, press buttons, try things and don't be scared. Sure there are times to be careful, but most of the time it is far better to go wild.

I guess I am quite spoilt in having proper hosting servers (not live of course) which I am free to play around with and if something goes wrong I have a guy I just call up and he fixes my "performance tinkering."

Hi all,
I want to write a component to change the layout of the form. Ex: when I click that component, Back Color property of all controls on page will change to Red (at design-time, not at run-time). Is it possible to do that? How can I do that?
