Open Active Directory Users and Computers. In the appropriate OU create a new Group Policy named after the purpose. If you don't have an appropriate OU, create one. Making policies that affect everything is usually bad practice as far as I'm concerned.
Edit the new policy. Under 'User Configuration - Administrative Templates - Control Panel - Display' you can 'Prevent Changing Wall Paper'.
When you're at it you can also 'Hide the Desktop Tab'.
Under 'User Configuration - Administrative Templates - Desktop - Active Desktop' you can also 'Disable Active Desktop' if performance is an issue.

Hi All,
I need to determine and anticipate when the exception 'Out of memory' occur. The first easy case is scanning the virtual memory size due to 2GB limitation in Windows 32Bit OS.
But, this exception can occur in other circumstances. I suspect that the limit max of 'Commit Charge' value is reached. I don't know how to get this value.
Somebody can help me in this case ?

Out of memory exceptions happen whenever the .NET Framework can't allocate any more memory in the process. Don't try to predict it. Handle the exception.
It's not a good idea to skate along the edge of the Commit Charge Limit (the size of physical memory plus the size of all page files, less whatever physical memory the OS needs for itself) because you'll be swapping.
If you're trying to be like SQL Server and cache as much data in RAM as possible without starting to swap, see the GlobalMemoryStatusEx API and the ullAvailPhys member of the MEMORYSTATUSEX structure. I believe SQL Server tries to keep this value around 10MB.
Windows XP and later provide a way to be notified when free physical memory is either low or abundant. See CreateMemoryResourceNotification for more information.

My application uses a number of files, and when I run it as “Administrator”, the application opens those files with one contents; while when I run it as a current user – it opens the same files with different contents, and it maintains those copies completely separately!
What is all this Vista Shadow Copy nonsense, and how am I supposed to bypass it? I need a single copy of all files for my application, not one for each user!
Right now, Vista seems just totally unusable for this reason.
Please help!

This is most likely file virtualization. This is an application compatibility helper to allow programs running as standard users to appear to be able to write to protected system folders such as the Program Files or Windows folder.
This feature kicks in by default when User Account Control (UAC) is enabled, the program is not running elevated, and the program does not have a User Account Control manifest describing what rights it requires. A few other applications have virtualization turned on, for example, Internet Explorer, so that legacy add-ins still work. It must also be a 32-bit program - 64-bit programs are expected to have been written correctly for administrator/user separation.
You cannot bypass it. You should either:
- add a manifest to indicate that your application is for administration purposes (requireAdministrator) and should therefore run elevated (you will then get a UAC prompt on each run), or
- fix your application so it doesn't write to protected areas, and add a manifest to indicate that your application should run with minimum privileges (asInvoker).
As a bonus, if you follow the second route, your application will also work much better for standard (non-administrative) users on Windows 2000 and XP.
If your application needs to share files across users, it should be writing into the All Users profile.

My application doesn't require Administrator's rights, and i am using asInvoker in my manifest.
I am trying to manage all application files within C:\ProgramData\MySoftwareFiles. All users seem to have full acess to that folder, and i have no problem creating files there from my application.
However, files seem to be automatically duplicated into folder C:\Users\All Users\MySoftwareFiles. I don't understand why this happens. Can i not use c:\ProgramData folder for my software? Other software packages seem to be using it as well...

To be more specific, i am having this problem with a JET database that when i'm making changes under Administrator user they get into one DB, when under normal user - into different DB, even though the full path to the file is always the same...
I don't know if this if JET - specific problem or not...

I have been stuck on this for a while now and if somebody could point me in the right direction it would be appreciated. I am trying to add a tab to the property form that opens when you right-click a user in the active directory snap-in and select properties, this tab will show the manager, secretary and the assistant of the user. I have been looking at the MSDN articles but they are a mess and I don't fully understand them, it appears as if you can only do this in VC++. Does anybody know of a clear step by step tutorial or a working example out there that covers this topic?

I think the book "Windows 2000 Programming Bible" by John Paul Mueller [ISBN: 0-7645-3312-6] goes into some of that stuff, and I think it exists in PDF format if you have trouble finding it in the shops.

I'm implementing a firewall on windows 2003 OS with java.
First step i capture packets from network interface card with jpcap api.Acording to captured packets i change windows registry with com.ice.jni.registry to block packets.
My problem is about block pinging.How can i do this? Which registry's
should i change?

No, you are not implementing a firewall. You are implementing a third-party-frontend for the Windows Firewall. And to do that, well... how about creating a copy of your registry (export everything), then change a setting, export your registry to another file and compare those two?

Hi, my computer inffect with the virus. When it come into my system, it general 15 character in word option and every document that I open and close, when I open again it display a password dialog box to enter. I didn't set any password and the file couldn't open. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

I don't know, how about removing the virus?? There are plenty of virus scanners out there in the world.
As for the documents that have been modified, you'll have to Google for "Word remove password". There may be some utilities out there that can do this, but don't hold your breath for a "one click" solution. Recovering the documents may take a lot of manual work.
There is something to be said for backups...

ls -R -l *.log
My next problem would be to feed that to "rm" command to delete them...

In Vista OS the keys "DefaultUserName" & "DefaultDomainName" are not present under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\
Is there any other key in the registry which stores current logged on UserName & domain? Or
I need to manually add these keys to the registry and everytime different user logs on he has to update this value to his user name?
Please suggest if there is any other alternative?

Why do you want to use the registry? The GetUserName function gives the currently-logged-on user, including the domain name (if any).

These keys aren't guaranteed to be on any version of Windows as they are part of the process to automate a windows login. This feature permits other users to start your computer and to use the account that you establish to automatically log on. However, if you turn on autologon, using Windows XP becomes more convenient. However, using this feature can pose a security risk.
You shouldn't rely on these keys, but should use the System.Environment.UserName property or the GetUserName[^] Win32 API call.

When we insert a USB disk, a Windows message pops up to ask user what appl user wants to run.
How do I get rid of that popup message?
(the same "action" as getting rid of the CD/DVD auto-run in the registry)

Im guessing you mean the "AutoPlay" dialog?
You could open up gpedit.msc (from start, run), then go through Administrative Templates - System and then Mark "Turn off Autoplay", enable it for all drives...

I tried gpedit.msc, there is no "autoplay" under Adm Temp-System or any other places under Adm Templ.
Under "Windows Media Player", there is an item "Do not show first use dialog boxes", I tried that, but it doesnt work.
