I'm more aware of the power my computer uses since I switched to using a laptop. Now I switch it off overnight.

It also helps that Mac OS X boots up pretty quickly.

It is second nature now, I don't even mean it as promotion. Just a "Oh yeah, Mac does it this way which makes it really nice and easy" thought.

And there are things Mac OS X isn't great at. Finder for one is pretty crap, even Windows Explorer is better.

Who is using the hibernate or suspend feature? I normally put my computer in standby or hibernate (notebook).

I can't get it to work properly with vista and dont' care enough to find out why, when I attempt to use it the computer just comes out of hibernation immediately after going into it on it's own. My quad core boots so fast that it's just as easy to shut it down anyway.

its probably your mouse/keyboard. in device manager make sure in the mouse and keyboard properties the checkbox saying "allow this device to bring the computer out of standby mode" is NOT checked. Smile | :)

I use hibernation (on Vista) and it works well.

I hibernate my laptop, with WinXP, but needed to patch it first as I have 2Gb RAM.

Works well.

By the time you hibernate the machine, if you have Visual Studio open via source safe.. then it tend to act weird this is true for VSS and Vault

I just put my PC into S3 standby mode - it gives you the best of both worlds! Resumes in under 3 seconds and uses barely any power Smile | :)

As I do shut down my computers more than during weekends/holidays but not every day, a fifth alternative - Most of the times would've been my choice [if available].

I work from home and have dev boxes, a linux server, a 2k server (glorified pc's really) and my primary workstation that has its own db's running on it not to mention it does its backups, vscans, etc... nightly while I am sleeping so it doesn't bog me down during the work day.

However, all 3 pc's are running off a KVM on one of my monitors, I use 3-19" flat panels on my primary w/s, and I do turn the monitors off every night.

And being a developer working from home, my wife and kids are all computer junkies! Laugh | :laugh:

So add 4 more computers to the mix for the family. But they all get shut down when not in use.

So I guess I would fall into the Most of the times category seeing the majority of my pc's get shut down nightly if not longer! Wink | ;)

The single word form is a noun: "Please start the shutdown of the computer."

The separate word form is the verb: "I will shut down the computer."

Same goes for "Log in" versus "Login", and "Back up" versus "Backup".

So the survey question should read:

"Do you shut down your computer overnight?"
