QuestionASP tags in VS2005 Pin

This is more a Visual Studio doubt than an ASPX question, but anyway:

I'm currently using VS2005 to develop ASP 2.0 (aspx) pages. Our pages template are somewhat different from your usual ASP Web Form, in that it doesn't have the html xmlns tag and DOCTYPE tag, which VS usually inserts on its default Web Form pages.

Very well, the problem is this: for some reason, VS doesn't recognizes ASP tags (<asp:xxx />) on our document. This fact blocks the use of AutoComplete and worse yet, it messes up with the "format" funcionality because everything inside a asp:panel is inserted on a single line.

Anyone has any ideia on what makes VS recognize asp tags inside a aspx document? Does it has anything to do with the inherited class or with some "include-like" tag on the code, such as link and @Page?

Could it be that some of our header code is messing things up? Our page doesn't have <body> or <head> or any other default html tags because the architecture inserts the webcode into another page (something like the "master" functionality).

Thanks in advance for any light on the subject.
