is it actually possible to generate C from C++ with current IDEs?

I believe so but its certainly not worthwhile.

Or has that been dropped? I never knew it was ever possible in fact.

Look at this article about CFront. Clickety[^]

The reason my colleague is asking this question is possibly because he learnt C++ when it was new (he's been in the industry a while), so at that time such an approach may have been instructive.

I've learned C in school switching almost immediately to c++. And I never had any problems to create (read compile) a working c++ program. But those school projects are in fact very basic forms of C++.
So yeah I have written an C++ program, but if falls under the term C with classes. I've learned to write/design my first C++ program in the industry. It toke me about a month of 6 to learn to use the MFC libraries. Two years later wasn't to afraid to run/peek and even poke into their code.

But to fully understand C++, I'm still learning today (9 years later) and still haven't reached the limits of this marvelous language.
