With the additional info I believe your approach is over complicating things.
I would use a new thread for a complicated and time consuming task where the app can do better things then just waiting. Yours however, if I understand you right, has a "simple" and "Quick" task you like to delay.
Better not take that task and only start it after the delay? You could just use a timer to start it. If it is essential that the "computer" is producing it's answer character by character then maybe it is the "adding characters bit" you want to delay? This possibly allows a re-compute of the computer task if it needs to respond to users input. Is all that relevant?

You really can't do much more than anyone else does, which is to hide the values in either a file, or the register. A common way to do it, is to have a couple of files called xxx.dll ( whatever ) in your app directory, and have junk in them. Just modify specific bytes in those files to store things like the date the app will expire, and the last date the app was used. You need the latter to work out if time ever goes backwards. If it does by more than an hour ( don't forget daylight savings time ), then odds are the user is playing around to kill your protection. But, don't forget about people who travel, my notebook clock goes back 18 hours regularly.

What have you tried ?
Dim bm as Bitmap
bm = new Bitmap("c:\myfile.bmp")
bm = Bitmap.FromFile("c:\myfile.bmp)
What else ?
If you want to get at the bitmap bits, VB.NET is kind of useless for that, read my articles on image processing in C#, you're better off writing a C# dll to handle it. You can use GetPixel, but it's slower.

Hi,
I am converting Word to Html, but I am losing all my footers and headers. Is there any way to retain them?
I am using the MS Word Object 9 library.
I would really appreciate help on this as I have spent ages looking for any answer.

First, this has nothing to do with VB.NET.
Next, you'll have to convert them to sperate HTML SPAN sections yourself. There are no such things as Headers and Footers in HTML.

Hello,
I've a Textbox on my form and my locale and regional Language settings are Standard English(UK). I want to allow the Greek characters to be typed and displayed in the textbox(or rich textbox) and at the same time want to get it's KeyValue (like the ascii key value A = 65) so that certain check can be performed.
Any Help would be really appreciated?

Hello all!
i want to add my custom attribute to a Control member of a form. For exmaple there is the following code line:
<myattribute()> _ Public WithEvents grdTest as DataGridView
Now, at runtime, i want to read the the information of the MyAttribute instance of the grdTest-Control but when i call GetCustomAttributes of the PropertyInfo of the grdTest control instance the resulting array has zero elements ... it seems, that the changes i made in the TestForm.Designer.vb are not compiled ...
has anyone any idea?

hi. my question is how can i make a form in vb.net that retrieves the usernames from mysql database of the forum that i have hosted in the www.awardspace.com.
Im new in this things of databases and im building a app that shows all the usernames registered but this part is making my head spin. lol

Well first you will need something to list those in, .NET 1.1 would be a DataGrid, .NET 2.0 will be a DataGridView. You need to create some type of stored procedure or parameterized query that will access the database and return a dataset of names that you will then set as the datasource to the DataGridView and can then call .DataBind.
The good thing about .NET 2.0 is that they make it much more simple that it even needs to be so people can easily create bad code and foster bad habits but if it is just a simple application that will be used internally by yourself you can probably get away with it. Any of the concepts you dont understand can easily be searched for with Google and you will get some greate articles with step by step instructions.

the connection is my problem, i have no idea how to connect to database, the only tutorials i found in the net is how to connect to mysql database in local computer, but my database is hosted in anothet site, more especific in www.awardspace.com.

Ahhh, I see. Well then you will need to have access through any security on the site and probably the IP address of the database. When you are remote instead of accessing SQLServer01 you would access 999.999.999.999 or whatever the IP is. As long as you have THAT piece and you have access into the server then everything should be the same.
Just in case you need it - www.connectionstrings.com[^].

that help alot, now i just need to figure out to use it. lol my app is cuurently connecting to a access database but that sucks because every time the users use it the program have to upload it via FTP to the server again.
Did you have any example of how to use the connection string?

the awardspace server does not accept remote connections. i have no other choice but to host in my own pc. thanks for your help

I have an Access 2003 database and using VB.Net 2003
I have a query in Access e.g. myQuery. In this query it has a date field. I want to pass 2 parameters to this field (myDate) e.g. between 01/01/1999 and 30/01/1999.
My query in VB.Net is
"EXECUTE myQuery #01/01/1999#, #30/01/1999#"
For some strange reason it is only picking up the 01/01/1999 value.
The question is,
How can I pass 2 parameters via VB.Net to a field in Access which uses the between date function in a field.

The standard way to do it is to use an OleDbCommand object, supplying it with the name of the stored procedure, and a couple of OleDbParameter objects.
