But looking at the long itrating code ..
IS IT ADVISABLE TO USE SQLHelper.VB FOR Applications With Heavy Data Access Rate

I've never had any problems with it, but then again, that all depends on your definition of "Heavy Data Access Rate"!
You could write a smaller test app against the library, simulating what you think your data transactions are going to be, then run your own benchmarks.

I have written a program that requires a password to be created when it is first run, this is then encrypted and stored on the computer C:/Test.txt. the next time the program is run you enter your password, which is encrypted and compared against the encrypted password on file, and if they match you can use the program.
I don't think storing the encrypted password as C:/Test.txt is a good thing, so where is the best place to hide it away, and how is it done?
Any help, advice or interesting articles will be welcome.

yea , like your subject says .go for the registry.You can put it HKEY_LoCALMACHINE\softwares\[software name]\pass
but this is the most obvious place some1 will have it stored.So i suggest having your encryption really strong because there is no place you can acutally "hid" your password.. there are crackers that can dissamble the program and fine out.
but hey i have got one really good sugesstion.. try using these API ->

they write stuff in .ini format into WIN.INI.I' bet very very few would guess u have it there.Also u should;nt have names that correspond to your app. So even if some one checks the win.ini file thy should NOT see ur app name or something thats on ur app in there!

Question
1. can we access the web that we just created in the internet??
2. if yes, can everyone access the web that i've create??
3. i dont understand about how to get the 'server name' to make the
project. actually i've read about creating an XML Web service client

address of the web server?? actually the default the project server is
"http://localhost". so what actually happen if i just use "http://localhost"?
can everyone access my web???

That depends on what you mean by "access the web". But, generally, yes, VB.NET can get the any publicly available website as well as create them using ASP.NET technology.

Of course! So long as the website is publicly visible on the Internet. There are MANY hosting companies that support ASP.NET applications.

OK. You've got some homework to do. Especially in how the Internet and web servers work, along with general IP networking.
The webserver address specifies the location of the IIS server that your going to develop your ASP.NET project on. It is HIGHLY recommended that you develop your site on an IIS server on your own network, then transfer the completed site to a hosting server.
Can anyone on the Internet see your website? Only if the machine that is hosting the site is visible on the Internet. Generally, this answer is no, unless you properly configure your network and machines and have them patched up and properly secured.
If you're asking these kinds of questions, I would HIGHLY suggest you DON'T do this. There are many security concerns with opening up your private network to the real world. You'll probably have your network attacked within hours and risk having your machines turned into zombies, if not wrecked, spamming the rest of the world for you.

Hi all,
Seeing as there's no MS Office board, I thought I might try here.
Basically what I want to do is during setup is to check that all components of Microsoft Office have been installed and if not, launch Windows Installer to install the rest of the components. Doing this during setup is not a problem for me, it's just the checking of components of Microsoft Office that's the real difficulty.

Don't know if it's any use but have you had a look at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\{Version}\{Application}? I can't tell what's in here since I always install everything. But under each {Application} node there is an InstallRoot key.

As far as I can tell, the Install Root key only contains the path to which Microsoft Office was installed. Any other ideas?

That would be correct because if you look in that directory you'll see that Word, Excel, Access, InfoPath etc are all installed there. A possibility would be to use this registry key to get the root path. Then check for the existance of:
winword.exe = Word
excel.exe = Excel
msaccess.exe = Access
infopath.exe = InfoPath
ois.exe = Picture Manager
etc etc
Any use? If the exe doesn't exist then presumably the application doesn't exist.

Just checking that Word, Excel and that lot is installed isn't quite what I want to do. If you go into Add/Remove programs can click Change on MS Office and then select add or remove components, you can see a listing of all the sub-components (ie. .NET programability support in Office 2003, or Mail Merge templates). Basically I want to check that all of this is installed during my programs installation.

I want VB.Net 2005 to pause for x amount of seconds then continue on. I've tried the System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(xxxx) method and that sort of works. If I have multiple threads in there it seems to pause the combine time of the Sleep method & only execute the last line.
For example:

System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(3000)<br />
Label6.Text = "Off!!!"<br />
System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(3000)<br />
Label6.Text = "Something else!!!"<br />
only nets me "Something else!!!" 6 seconds later.  There has to be a clean way to do this.

You'll probably need to call Application.DoEvents to give the UI a chance to refresh before you suspend it's thread.

There is a COM library for accessing Word, Excel, Access databases etc. Just add a reference or component or what-ever it's called in VB6 and it should be pretty obvious from there on (sorry havn't used VB6 for 2 years or so but I do remember playing around with it).

I am trying to write a piece of code that spawns a window when the user presses both mouse buttons simultaneously.
I have been thinking the only way to do this would be to have two mouse hooks, watching for left and right clicks respectively, and checking the time difference between clicks. It would then cancel the message if the time is within a certain interval, and show the window.
Any better ideas? Please?

The easiest way would be to handle the click event and check the state of the buttons inside the event. The following will close the form if both buttons are depressed:

There would be no form present when watching for mouse clicks. This is why I have suggested using a mouse hook.

I have a form that has ftp information entered and the program connected to the website. The next time a user starts the program, I want that info to be in a pull down for them to select. Eventully, the pulldown will have several websites ftp info stored in them. I was thinking of storing the info in an xml file but I realize this is not very secure. Is there a better way to store this information.

Just encrypt the sensitive data. The only problem then is encrypting the encryption keys, and encrypting the encrypted encryption keys......
It's all a balance of how much security you need but the .NET Framework's System.Security.Cryptography namespace will help you out, there are assymetric and symmetric algorithms there including RSA and TripleDES.

Hi there.
You can either save the information in the registry or in a XML file, but you should incript the data to make in more secure. There is DLL's and source code available to encode and decode data. For example CryptoAPI.cls. This is a VB6 based class module that I use to encrypt data.
Hope this will help you in some way.

its edits xml files duh!! lol .. well u have to look up what xml is first.If u know xml(i doubt it) , an xml editor smartly allows u to edit xml files.For eg.
if u have this piece of xml in an xml file
<question status="answered"> What is XML?</question>
normally u could just edit it in notepad , but an xml edit would allow u to 'smartly' edit the file as in it would be able to change the value of status or the node value etc,, if what i'm sayin is bouncing of your head i really suggest reading something on what xml is.And its really helpful nowadays , a lot of things are based on XML.
