An update from the Tee Hee post form yesterday!
So, I went to football practice with The BoyTM (and ended up playing in their match - 45 minutes of fottball in 30 degree heat - wheeeeeeeew! was I knackered!
Anyway - when we got home, Mum calls him & says "Oh! look we forgot a present!" and hands him a small package. Unwrapped, it is a computer game.
He was awesome! "Thanks. But this is for the XBox One" He puts on a brave face.
"Oh well!" says Mrs. Maxxx "You'd better have this then" and points him to a much larger box. Containing the Xbox One.
It is rare that he is speechless - but this was one of those times.
We set it up ...
then had to wait hours because there were several Gigabytes of updates to download.
Onya Microsoft!

Have you tried any of the free games that came with it? Need to download those bastards too. 40-50GB a game.
My kids said faarrrkkkk it and only play the ones they bought on disks.

Bought ours new at Christmas. The games are vouchers to download.

Kids (18 and 15 in the weeks after Christmas) wanted shoot the sh*t out of things games that were more like AUD$90.00 each. No idea what the games are as I don't give a rat's arse about them.

Yeah - it astounds me that there are like 4 or 5 versions of the same game, and they all want the latest release that is pretty much exactly the same , but costs $90 while the old version gets sold off for $10
then they spend the $90 and still play the old one!
Still, it's only money, and I'm rich! *

With luck, by the time they get around to it, the fourth one is in the bargain bin.

Should've gone with a variant of my plan;[^] and let the zero day patches DL while having fun elsewhere.
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?

I'm just curious, how should Microsoft have handled the pushing out of updates, then? If you need the updates, how should Microsoft do this, so that users are not upset with them?...not push out updates or just make sure updates are under 50mb?
I'm not trying to pick a fight here, I just don't understand how this is Microsoft's fault.
|
|
|
|
|
Well, I don't mind HAVING to install updates that are important - but I don't get the choice - start up a new XBox & it tells me I have to apply updates - apparently no choices of which - so it is probably updating stuff for which I have no (immediate) need (like TV watching, for example)
And the size of the updates I am sure exceeds the size of the OS - so they are being lazy - don't patch, replace.
Now this is forgivable on open hardware like a PC - but on an XBOX where they have control over everything, they know (from a very small list) what hardware is there, so don't have to blanket-install stuff - they could , I am sure, make small patches for the 'urgent' fixes and give the option of applying fixes to other parts if and when the user wants to use them
It's like buying a car and not being able to drive it for a day because it needs repairing; if the brakes might fail, then sure, fix it NOW - but if the rear left speaker crackles, hell, I'll book it in for another day!
Also, frankly, requiring a couple of Gb of updates for hardware that is < 1 year old doesn't fill you with confidence that the software was well tested, does it?!

It might also be your internet connection speed.
We just bought our son an XBOX 360, and had set it up last night. The updates only took about 5 minutes. I would think that I had the same updates you did, more or less.
Updates never bothered me. I would rather have the software working, then not working, because no updates were installed or pushed out. I think internet speed has everything to do with how fast an update gets downloaded, obviously.

From memory the Xbox one updates were just under 2gb - though I could be wrong. The game updates were more like 4gb.
If you can dowoad 2gb in 5 mins I M envious!!!
