I agree with you that Howard Shore did a great job on the soundtrack. Maybe I could also say that the costumes are very well done and some shots are very beautiful. But what already bothered me with LOTR, bothers me even more in The Hobbit. And I'm not saying that Peter Jackson did a bad job on the movies, he did it very well, just not for my imagination. I read these books when I was little and the mood is very important. It gets lost in the movies and the characters are altered too much sometimes. For example Frodo saying to Sam: "Go home". I mean that is something he would never do, their friendship is so tight and they trust each other with their lives, so this part of the story was completely wrong. Not mentioning Gimli the comedian an Legolas the acrobat.
And I do understand it's a Hollywood movie and it has to sell and appease the masses. I also understand that Peter Jackson did it his way - but it's not for me, I would prefer to read the books once more than watch the movies any time soon.
So this won't be a complete rant, I loved the Balrog and the Ents, they were very well made. And Viggo Mortensen, Sir Christopher Lee, Sir Ian McKellen and Hugo Weaving acted very well and were also a perfect fit for the roles they had.

I haven't read the books (got stuck in part II, I only read on vacations). Perhaps that's why I like them better than The Hobbit, because I have read The Hobbit.
I do feel as though the LOTR movies are more impressive than The Hobbit. I do agree on the comedian and acrobat part... It doesn't fit the movie and The Hobbit has much more of it.
They're still awesome movies though.

Yeah they are well made, but if you take them a bit out of context. But then comparing any movie that has been made by a book to the book, you will find differences between them, for better or worse.
I am still going to go see The Hobbit if not for another reason, because my girlfriend wants to see it
In all likelihood we're going today, can't wait to see it. I like that they have included Gandalf, Saruman and Sauron, that part might be very interesting.

When I went to the the theat(er|re) I expected the film to be about the entire book. Rather surprised to find out there are three movies. The third opens here Wednesday. I expect an appearance by Tim Benzedrine or I will be thoroughly disappointed.

Got the video of the first movie for Christmas a couple of years ago. At the time I thought it was going to be the whole book.

Oh yes. I was down in "the smoke" with the family for the weekend. That's enough to kill off any festive goodwill and peace to all.

Being a Brit living in the US for nineteen years now I have found my vocabulary shrinking as I avoid using words most mercans don't understand. For example, "penultimate" seems to be a big problem for just about all mercans.
On the other hand I have expanded my vocabulary with useful new words, such as "Doh!"

You must be turning into a redneck if you are saying mercans.

Actually I understand that Rednecks use "merkans"! I was using "mercans" which is clearly quite different and indicates a British origin.
