Not really.
Careful driving: proceed at moderate speed, put on the direction indicators a bit before having to turn, don't make sudden maneuvres or brakes if not needed, don't approach semaphores like a F1 racer, look carefully before turning, give precedence when needed.
Defensive driving: remember that potentially you are the ONLY ONE doing so and all the others will do the opposite.
While it may seems derogatory, I can tell you by direct experience that it is not, one ID-10T can ruin you. Last month I destroyed my beloved car because I was driving carefully (below the limit and with the safety distances) but not defensively. And the insurance gave me the mistake (aka it doesn't pay me) because I hit the car from behind - despite the driver made a sudden stop because she remembered at the last moment to enter the gas station across the other lane. Of course she put on the indicators while I was frantically braking.
Luckily noone got hurt but now I have 5000 € of damage to my car and had to revert to my first one, that luckily I kept in the big garage of my parents.

I am sorry to be the pedant, but this is not compatible. Safety distances means you can stop even if the car in front of you makes an emergency stop.
This said, I hope you told that elephanting sunshine what she deserved. Probably does not improve the situation, but this added to the hit definitely make a good aide-mémoire for the next time she contemplates changing directions in the last second.

I needed only 3 or 4 meters more, also I didn't have the ABS (13 years old car, I can't afford newer models). Also I just stopped accelerating from 50 km/h to slightly less than the 70 km/h limit, so I had the whole car's inertia with me. Add to it that I spent 0,5 seconds looking at the rear view mirror in case someone was to overtake me (this is careful driving) and pushed the clutch while emergency braking (later my father taught me it was a bad idea) prolonging the brake...
Most of the damage to my car came from the fact that I tried to turn to the left in orderd to not hit her frontally and hit with the softest part of my car the hardest of her. I could have made much better maneuvres: I could have not braked and simply turned the wheel so to avoid completely collision (I took her only with 30 com of my carm, enough to damage me a lot), or not pushed the clutch while braking, and many other things... I have the driving license since 3 years so I have still a lot of experience to make.

ABS does not help reducing braking distance at such speed, it only helps you keep your vehicle manoeuvrable.

This is completely OK. Clutch vs. no clutch while emergency braking is as old a debate as tabs vs. spaces, but most driving schools recommend hitting the clutch while braking. That is what you will most probably do anyway.
Also, if you had never made an emergency brake before: people doing it for the first time only push at 65% of what they could have done -> practice is really helpful.

The most efficient braking is in straight direction -> you put all the weight on the front wheels. Turning while braking can result in spectacular flipping. Turning without braking leads you to cross the other direction road or to go full speed in the bushes...
Do not feel bad, I am certainly sure you made everything you could given the situation. Only keep much longer distance with the front car...

I know, I know, I was turning towards the bushes and at that speed I actually could have pulled myself between the other car and the rest of the lane - it was a pretty large lane. I just didn't have the time to think.

Thanks for the advices and the kind words. Now I tend to drive more slowly and with more eye to the distances. At least I learnt something from this!

Completely agree. Disengaging the transmission from the drive train means it isn't transferring power to your wheels. I've done this in automatics (shift to neutral) to help stop more quickly. It isn't guaranteed to help a whole lot, but it certainly isn't going to hurt.

I don't think that safe distances are still a part of the UK driving test. But, for us oldies ...
At x miles per hour
Reaction distance = x feet
Breaking distance = x * x / 20 feet
Safe distance = Reaction distance + Breaking distance
So, at 20 mph, safe distance = 20 + 20 * 20 / 20 = 40 feet
and at 70 mph, safe distance = 70 + 70 * 70 / 20 = 315 feet
(For the test, we just had to remember the answers, but I created the above formula which I found was easier to use than remembering a set of numbers)

Interesting. Same using a real unit system and "our" formulas :
Driving at x 10km/h (= driving speed divided by ten)
Reaction distance = 3 * x meters
Braking distance = x * x meters.
20mph = 30km/h
So safe distance = 3 * 3 + 3 * 3 = 18m ( 40 feet = 12m, real value is 19m = 62feet)
70 mph = 110km/h
So safe distance = 3 * 11 + 11 * 11 = 33 + 121 = 154m (315 feet = 96m, real value is about 110m = 360 feet)
You guys tend to underestimate a bit. We overestimate quite a lot´.
But since nobody is never ever calculating this while driving, let alone being able to estimate a distance correctly, there is no use of this

My main problem was that I kept considering myself the less skilled driver on the road. The car crash taught me that this is not true, not always at least. Now I regard the surrounging vehicles as drivend by insane drunk monkeys until I have proof of the opposite (i.e. they are far away enough they don't represent a danger for me).

Turns out defensive driving is a way of driving to minimise risk from things that are not you designed by someone a long time ago.
I thought defensive driving was driving in a way so as to defend your space, defend your lane, block others from delaying you or taking the bit of road that should be yours.
Maybe the term as used over here is different to how it was originally defined and used elsewhere.
Or maybe I am just wrong.

When I took my motorbike test back in 2000 I was taught to ride defensively by understanding the following:
If a driver does not make eye contact with you they cannot see you.
Always assume that other drivers are about to do something that will endanger your life.
Ride in a manner where when another driver endangers your life you can get out of the way quickly, whether that is by accelerating or braking.

Defensive Driving means you give up your rights at every junktion or action while driving.
Foresighted Driving means you don't drive defensive, but you try to get the situation before someone else f***s up and in this case you would give up your rights.
