are u saying you don't know how to use classes and objects? Or instantiate/create references to classes? If yes, then i would recommend reading up on OOP a little...

generally, MS Office won't be or shouldn't be installed on servers so my solution is independent of Interop. What if you deploy your website to a server that doesn't allow installing office? your functionality won't work. don't make your application dependent on things like interop.

Can you please improve your question a bit? if you are using session for authentication and opening the authenticated page in a different tab of the same browser, then this is the expected behavior as the session cookie still exists on the computer for that browser and is valid. Try using a different browser to open the copy and pasted url and see if that opens up.

well, traditionally silverlight controls are as a matter hosted in an ASPX page if you are making a Silverlight web app. You would generally have one host page that you show various silverlight screens. If you need more specific info, you would have to elaborate on the question.

its obviously an issue with the multi-threading code you have. for some reason, the locking is not working i.e. one thread is trying to read some data that the other thread was meant to write but couldn't get to it due to contention and hence the "no data present" error. IMO atleast.

you would rarely get something thats exactly to your needs, you would always have to customise a little bit to get it to do what you want it to do. I haven't ahd a look at the source code myself but I am sure you can create custom events and attach an event handler that would execute when something get rescheduled. This is the joy of programming, you can create what you want.

Looks like that "someone" has never heard of DataSet or List or any other advanced collections .NET has to offer. Unless, you intend to call this code via a service call for an AutoCompleteExtender control but even then the signature would be wrong.

Well, by users I meant companies that might want to use a product like this to schedule posts on Facebook for product marketing of sorts. May be based on certain analytics and stats they might wanna schedule posts for say, Christmas Eve. This would still require the server to spawn "x" number of threads each taking care of one schedule, but the question then arises "how do you make a thread poll for date and time?" is it ok to have a thread run in a while loop checking time every second to see if its time yet and if it is, then post stuff and terminate itself? Would the service need to keep track of which threads have finished and which are still running? I am only assuming that in this case data sharing among threads and hence inter-thread communication is not needed.
I am sorry its not even my question, yet I am intrigued about this problem :)
I.explore.code
18-Oct-12 10:50am

but if there are multiple users using the scheduling website, then you would have to save their schedules in a database, wouldn't you? and then somehow make the service aware that the scehdules are available and then have the service execute all those schedules without a slip. Wouldn't this require some sort of thread spawning for each schedule so that one service doesn't get overloaded with all the requests and running the risk of missing a schedule. May be I am overthinking this one, and may be there is a simpler idea. What do you reckon?

I think you should redesign your forms to make the controls and their behavior less coupled. Have a Gridview that will have a Edit button template field to edit a record, a Delete button template field to delete a record and a totally separate form level button to Add new record. That way you can easily separate buttons and behaviors.
Unfortunately, this is not something you can instantly learn on a forum like this, you are gonna have to read up and do it yourself.

Create a separate class with singleton instance variable and one readonly property of type SqlConnection. Before returning the connection, check to see if it is null, if it is, instantiate it otherwise just let it return. Make sure this class can be accessed throughout your data access layer. You would need to provide the connection string to the connection instantiation code which you can probably do when the very first time your app runs.

yeah I thought so, in that case you will have to download the files to your server/machine first and then update your database. Assuming that these XML files always contain updated data, you can download them anytime preferably at night when you know the data is not going to be used. And once the files are all downloaded then you can kick-off the database update. Does this make sense?

There is a component in .NET called FileSystemWatcher that monitors a folder for any changes and raises events if any changes are made. Have a look at this article:
FileSystemWatcherEx
. Just a recommendation, rather than trying to sweat to update just the changes its best if you delete the previous data (if you don't need it) and re-populating your tables with the new XML files. Since it would be running at zero or low load time, it should be alright.
Also make sure that you have network path access to the folder that you want to monitor, otherwise, the FSW component wouldn't work. If you don't have network path access to the drive/folder, you would have to download the files to your server, read the file data in dataset or something, read the table data in another dataset, compare and then save the changes. This is not the full solution but an idea which you can certainly improvise upon.

You are the same person asking about the "Page level cache" problem too, aren't you? :) Anyway, in this case it really depends on how much data you are loading in your auto-complete extender and whether or not the data is coming from just one table or its being joined with several other tables and then returned. And the reason it takes only 0.5-1 secs second time on, is that it caches previously loaded results and uses them if you type in the same query string again (i.e. if you set the caching property to true). Have a look at your DB queries and the query execution plan. Optimisation problems are very specific to the system architecture and overall design, so it is difficult to come up with a general remedy.
I.explore.code

Also look at your db queries, see what's the execution plan is like.

Pages load slow because of the following reasons AFAIK:
1. Lot of data that takes longer to get from the db
2. If all that load of data has to be rendered on the page in list based controls which explodes the size of the viewstate and the page thereby making it slow to render.
3. Network connection speed is slow.
Identify what is the problem in your case. Look at the requests and responses using Fiddler or Firebug, these tools can help a lot to identify where its getting messed up.
I.explore.code
12-Oct-12 3:27am
View
If the page loading is slow then code is the first place I would look into. Caching is not going to improve anything, what if the cache gets invalidated at some point? You are still gonna have to reload the new page which would still be slow. Look into your code see if there is anything you can optimize there, code, data, design of the page anything. Don't cache just yet.

You need to improve your question to stand any chance of help! In its current state it barely makes any sense. Plus, no one here does personal favours by sending customised solutions to you e-mail id. So you can forget that. You need to read up on joins and binding composite data to controls. One hint I would give you though is, "Use extenstion methods for your objects" they are the best fit for this kind of problems.

this is why you should always have back-up of all your projects secured in an external hard-drive synced with cloud and locked away in shock-proof vault with the key embedded in your skin. Add some error logging in your catch block and write the StackTrace to a file on your server. That should give details of any server side errors that might be happening, although, this error is a JavaScript error which probably is happening due to something not rendering properly. Make sure you don't any unterminated string constants in your markup or config file.

do you have Firebug installed or Fiddler? If not, i recommend installing them and see what is happening with the request and response cycle. Most likely it would be a 500-Internal Server Error. You can also set the <customerrors mode="Off"> under <system.web> section of your config file to render the error on page. Also, there is a maximum limit default set by Microsoft on how many controls u can render on a page.

I know its probably not the best parallel, but I am thinking the way chat applications work say on facebook. Basically, its a server socket program that's sat listening at a specific port, clients (aka gamers) connect to that server address and start sending messages i.e. playing game.
The server socket creates a tunnel directly with each client and also keeps a track of which clients are still in the game. Thinking of Texas Poker on Facebook. Once you have a sessioned tunnel created, you can use customised commands sent over TCP/IP to cause a certain action to happen. I would really love to see what others have to say on this.

You are missing this: ClientIDMode="Static" property for textboxes and the button. What this property does is tell the server to use the ID that has been provided for e.g. "btnFU" rather than generating its own at runtime when the page is rendered. Since you have not included that property, jQuery cannot find btnFU because its been rendered with an autogenerated ID that looks something like "ctl001_$blahblah". If you put this property back in both the text boxes and the button, it should work.

if you are asking about snail-mail then yes, its possible. The postal department won't ask for a username and password. If you are asking about e-mails, the no. For sending an e-mail you would need your own username and password to login to the e-mail client and send an e-mail.

u can try using jQuery selectors to read height and width from the controls and then use the css function to apply that width and height to the image. generally ASP.NET, IIS and SQL Server handle all such issues internally i.e. simulatenous updating of database. Unless, a really fine grained control over the timing and sequencing of operations is needed in which case you would have to lock the resource being updated so that no one else can change it during that time. Unfortunately, thats all I can say from the limited information present in your question.

true. I have never worked with PHP professionally but only in hobby mode so I really can't comment on whether or not you can write well-layered structured code. One of my mates who has his tech start-up uses PHP professionally and does work with MVC which is sort of a nice way to structure code (I am not sure how well PHP lends itself to such a pattern though). But yeah, I personally don't have an affection for that language merely because of its disconnectedness and lack of type-safety. But then, its not the sword that matters but who swings it that does ;).
