DDE Connection Problems

Hi,

I have written a DDE server to provide data to a data logger system under Window 7 but its not working. My server works fine if I connect using Excel as the client. I have run a DDE debug program and the data logger is not even trying to start a conversation with my Application/Topic/Item - there are no DDE messages at all coming from the data logger.

I think the data logger's DDE communications is running as a Windows service so it might not be running as the current user. Could this be the problem? Will DDE work between different users or are there any security issues I need to deal with?

Its hard to know what to do when absolutely nothing happens, does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be wrong.

I know DDE is old hat but its what the data logger uses and I can't change that.

I'm just wondering, how could you fall to such a long obsolete topic as DDE? Why?
I successfully skipped this proprietary and non-standard feature when it was considered new, and saved a lot of time on it.

People do not care how much you know until they know how much you care. your reputation may be high here but it it somehow does not seem true compared to a the hard words that easily fly off your keyboard.

Like I said in my original question, it aint my choice dude, the application I need to pass data to only supports this communication method. I have to work with what I have!

Tony: First things First! Go to: Control Panel\System and Security\Administrative Tools Click on EventViewer. Now look and see if there are messages from the name of your DataLogger. Yes you are thinking correctly Win Services have a gauntlet of Security Thresholds to pass. Also look at the running Services in the Sevice Control Panel and and start and stop the service and see if there is any different set of behaviors. Then look at Event Viewer again.... IT is a start.
