repeater itself is null on button click and does not show its inheritance from system.web.ui.

I am working with repeater in asp.net. I am binding my repeater on button click event(button is not in repeater). i am getting error on repeater.datasource=dt; at this line in debugging mode dt has fetched the table with all populated fields, no value is null. then why am I getting this exception. repeater was bound succesfully on page load, One thing i noticed in both data bounds at this line repeater.datasource=dt when i move cursor on repeater it shows[repeater:null] while on page load bind repeater funtion it is not so.
