How would I display the total of a column in gridview on a label, but not as a footer?

I have a Gridview table with an hours column, that needs to show the total of the fields in view, so for example if I filtered the gridview to display only female records then the total label will adjust to show the total of the records shown. At the moment it displays a total of all hours in the database table and doesn't change after being filtered. I have tried googling but all I've found is footer totals which do not support my design.
