I have to create symbols in Adobe Illustrator using scripts. Can anyone help on how to create them? I am new to this and not able to make any progress.

What type of symbol?

custom shaped symbols as per the requirements. For e.g. a triangle. Illustrator supports 4 types of in built symbols(ellipse, rectangle, polygon and rounded rectangle). I am not able to create any new type of symbol in it.

Well,

At least for Ilustrator 14 (CS4) ... click on the CLUBS icon to engage the SYMBOLS panel. Then right-click the tiny drop-down arrow upper right and pick "Open Symbol Library". A list of these preset object sets will be added, after they appear separately in an open panel themselves (where you can now close it). Dragging the symbol to the workspace and saving the file will make that symbol local. You can then edit it as desired.

But as for scripting ... do you mean "in order to operate on a symbol"?
