I have a cellphone number to which I'd like to send an SMS text message, but don't know the carrier?

Edited your question - you don't send emails to phones - you send text messages. Emails are sent to email accounts...

Another way to tell what your phones carrier is by writing an SMS to your email account from the phone. To do this create a new text message, but send it to mail@somemail.com. Check your email, your phones carrier will be displayed in the "from" section. Hope this helps.
(some phones are not capable of doing this, although most phones are.)

Why do you need to know the carrier? That's irrelevant - simply send the message to the phone regardless of carrier...

I'd imagine the carrier can be determined from the cell phone number, have you looked in to that ? What APIs do you use to send the email, are they carrier specific ?

No you can't - at least not in my country. Here all numbers can be transferred between all carriers, so there's no way to tell just from the number alone.
