I recently installed a trial for an alternative virus checker and have subsequently removed it. But I cannot reactivate Windows Defender - I'm using Windows 8.

The only reason online research offers is that there must be another AV piece running. What am I missing?

This is the output from SecurityCheck.exe:

I have also tried to reactivate in using the admin account - but this didnt get a response either. I have looked up the Windows defender service using MSCONFIG, where it is stopped but is not offering any options to restart it.

Hi Bill,

I've seen that video/article among others. Trouble is even when I click Turn On Now in the action center, the button flickers but nothing else happens.
