Android phone, update to latest version?

hello I was considering buying the sony ericsson x10 which currently uses Android 1.6. I know it will soon have Android 2.0, but I am wondering if I am able to update the software or if I have to buy a new phone to update it? How exactly does it work?

Generally, you can update it. Though i believe this particular issue should be discussed in a mobile forum of Sony-Ericsson.
